This PCWorld article is a bit scary for someone who goes through a lot of ink cartridges… essentially, the article says that ink cartridges are notorious for claiming they’re empty long before they actually are, forcing consumers to replace the cartridge early and wasting a ton of costly ink. In many cases, according to the study, fully half of the ink in those cartridges will go unused! Depending on the brand of printer, this can be just an annoyance, as the cartridge will still print despite the low ink warning, but in other cases, the printer actually won’t work once the low ink sensor’s been tripped, which can mean that in order to use your printer, you’re having to replace parts that still work perfectly well. One more aspect of the problem with ink cartridges… it’s bad enough that replacing the ink for a year will often run you close to the price of the printer… but when you find out that you’re throwing away half your ink… makes full-price cartridges sting that much more. As a note, the article says that cleaning cycles on printers can be a major factor in wasted ink, so make you sure to avoid doing that any more often than necessary!

For those who dream of printing their photos of the game-winning catch before they've even left the game, it looks like HP Photosmart is making it easier to print photos on the go. The new A630, which everyone seems to be buzzing about, features a 4.8 inch touchscreen (according to HP, that's the biggest on any portable printer), a modest $149 price tag, and the ability to edit and print photos without needing a computer. The A530, a smaller version, runs a bit cheaper ($99) and prints up to 5x7 photos. Sounds like HP's printer line just made photo printing a whole lot faster!

Looks like Epson isn’t willing to let HP take all the prizes… according to this press release found on Nudgit.com, Epson’s new range of business printers are aimed at businesses wanting a reliable and fast way to print high volumes of color prints. No more outsourcing of color brochures to external printers!

According to Epson, the new Epson B-300 and B-500DN are capable of printing color inkjet prints as affordably as other inkjet printers handle mono prints, which should open up a lot of potential for lowering costs in the workplace on those big color print jobs.

For those continuing to look for alternatives to the inkjet, American Printer magazine has a good feature comparing the pros and cons of inkjet technology to the newer wave of electrophotographic (EP) presses. The article does a good job of delving into recent technological advances, describing the changes that have made xerography an increasingly viable choice. Granted, it’ll be a while before the initial cost barrier subsides enough for HP to start worrying about its home inkjet market, but there does seem to be a new player in the field.
