A few things...

Posted by kellie Jan 2, 2008

A few updates that I wanted to make you all aware of regarding the forums...

1) Thanks for letting me know that the black graphic across the top (the tool bar) was not showing up for you. This should be fixed now.

2) I'm working with the design team on some re-categorization of the forums. You'll notice the community list will be arranged more like it was previously -- with Operating Systems as a big category, and Windows, Mac and Linux underneath it. This is a work in progress, so if you see anything that looks a little funky, please know that this is why.

3) We'll be working to make a few other interface changes over the next few weeks. We welcome your ideas on how to make the forums more visually interesting and intuitive for all users -- beginners and experts. Please post your ideas in the comments.

Thank you all, and happy new year!

Kellie

working with the loading speeds would be nice since loading speeds aren't good at all

Yes, I've heard you loud and clear on this issue. However, I'm looking for input on graphical layouts and organization at this time.

Hey Kellie! I just now clicked on this thread and got a system error. Prior to that I had spent 25 minutes on an answer only to see it vanish into thin air. Are we having trouble with Clearspace again. This was very frustrating. When I clicked on the link in the error message it provided me with the stack and also mentioned Jive which I believe to be the provider of Clearspace.

Please PM or email me the stack trace. Yes, Jive is the maker of Clearspace. I'm not aware of any issues but that doesn't mean we aren't having them.

Jan 2, 2008 4:15 PM Click to view Flashorn's profile Flashorn in response to: kellie

Hey Kellie! Sorry but I did not keep the trace as I didn't think any one else would need them. If it happens again this evening I will most certainly keep and advise you of it.Thank You for responding so quickly.

try clearing your cache for system errors it happened to me and a clear cache worked

Love the new way the lists are on the left hand side. Very clear and organized. Good job. It was well worth the long wait.

Did you guys read my new thread "Thank You, PCWorld"?

Jan 2, 2008 4:46 PM Click to view Flashorn's profile Flashorn in response to: lilxkid24

Hey lil! My cache is cleared every time I close FF.

Thanks. There are some tricky things in how it's set up that prevented me from doing it before. I'm open to re-naming things or moving things up/down the list if you think something needs to change there. We're going to be changing out those little globe icons for something else soon.

I haven't, but I'll go track it down. As you can imagine, it's been a very busy day here with everyone getting back from vacation and all.

Jan 2, 2008 4:50 PM Click to view Flashorn's profile Flashorn in response to: kellie

Hey Kellie! It happened again. This time I tried to PM you but, the system would not recognize you as member. So I've sent a PM to MPH along with the info on the stack. I asked him to redirect it to you.

I would realy love it if you made a "Programming" and "Web Development" community here. I like the new arrangemnet, and I'm glad that the top-bar is back to normal again.

Grammatical correction: communities, not community.

I absolutely LOVE it all. I was getting really annoyed with the previous setup. Smaller icons makes things more visible for me and easier to click on instead of the eye bulgy garbage stuck at "32" font size from previous layout.

good to see the black top-bar, now its more vista like :-),

Hi Kellie. The changes look great. I am very impressed. The only suggestion I would make is to put the Troubleshooting (Answer Line) section lower. The newer members will gravitate to the first heading they see and post everything within that Community. I would suggest moving the Troubleshooting section down between the PCWorld and the Hangout sections.

Thank you -- I have reported it.

Jan 3, 2008 9:47 AM Click to view kellie's profile kellie in response to: TechyGuy

That is not really a content area that PC World focuses on, so I'm not sure how large it would be... but I'm willing to give it a try. Let's start with one (is there some way we could combine the two) and see where it goes. Where do you think it would go in the current setup -- can we put it in Software and Services, or does it need its own space?

I want to have enough communities to help people easily find information and topics they need, but I don't want the list to be so long that it scares people away or has the opposite effect -- there is so much that they can't find what they need.

Jan 3, 2008 9:48 AM Click to view kellie's profile kellie in response to: mphenterprises

MPH -- Well, that's kind of why I put it up there on the top. It seems like that's what most people come here for -- troubleshooting and help. So I put that on top because you're right -- new people will go for the first heading they see.

What is a better alternative to be on top? Should we put the PC World stuff (news discussion, etc) on top?

Jan 3, 2008 10:18 AM Click to view mphenterprises's profile mphenterprises in response to: kellie

Well, you mentioned that Operating Systems, justifably so, are given the most focus so I think that section should remain on top. This may be me, but I have always felt that the Answer Line Community was a "catch-all" for those Discussions that either could fall into several Communities or for those Discussions that didn't quite fit into any Community.

If anything, I feel that the header for the Answer Line Community should be renamed to a more universal term like Miscellaneous or something like that and should be moved below Software & Services. This way, this will give a new member a chance to select the right Community and prevents the bulk of all new Discussions going into one Community.

In any aspect, I really like the layout. I have always felt that outline formatting gives a much better expression of what needs to be said. Also, the bright yellow folders really draw attention to the Communities.

Jan 3, 2008 12:01 PM Click to view TechyGuy's profile TechyGuy in response to: kellie

Hmm. . .Perhaps the "web browsing and e-mail" category could be changed to "web" or "internet", and "e-mail", "web browsing", and "web development" could become 3 subcommunities. "programming" could fall under that "misc." category that MPH suggested, perhaps.

Jan 3, 2008 2:48 PM Click to view kellie's profile kellie in response to: mphenterprises

I see what you are saying about the heading, but I don't think Miscellaneous is the answer. That's not at all descriptive. I tried several different names and although I'm not in love with Troubleshooting, it's the best one I came up with.

The differentiator in Answer Line is that Lincoln Spector is active there. We have a similar thing on Macworld with Mac911 and Chris Breen. Theirs isn't on top (they put their Macworld-centric stuff on top) but it's close to it.

I agree that having all the posts go into one community isn't great, but ultimately I'd rather have that than have people not post because they can't figure out where to do it.

Jan 3, 2008 2:51 PM Click to view kellie's profile kellie in response to: TechyGuy

Hey Techy,

I saw in the email that you wanted to change Web Browsing & Email. That forum is meant to be about web browsers (example: I'm having this particular problem with Firefox, how do I change it) and email programs (gmail is acting up, how do I fix it). So it's not quite what you are looking for.

It's generally better to start with one forum and branch out. If there's some sort of turf war between programmers and web developers and they really need their own place, then that's fine. But I'd rather start them off in one place.

We really don't have a category that this easily fits into, but I'd like to avoid having a bunch of categories with only one thing in them. I'm open to doing this, we just need to figure out a smart way to do it.

Hey kellie! I just have an idea that I'd like to run past you if I may. I like to scour the web for info and new apps. and usually post my findings here. Now from your last discussion with Techy,I gather that some of the members would like a section where they could post their findings on new codes and such. Well, could I suggest a section where ALL information could be posted where there would be no points offered. Just plain old info on just about anything, new apps. new tricks, new codes, well you get the picture. What do you think? Could this be a viable option?

A few times I've wanted to post about a News story I either heard or read about, and I had to go into Answer Line because the News Discussion part of PCWorld was not availabe, and I didn't know where else to put it. I know that you mentioned that that thread is only for PCW's bot and that it should be posted according to theme, ie, an article about security would go in "Security," etc.

There are many members that are interested in other News stories besides the ones posted by the bot. Since we're talking about the new and improved PCW website, I think it would be great to have a section where we can post our News. Perhaps it could even be called Your News Stories, or Your News Articles to differenciate it from the bot's news.

I think that would be a plus for all the members of this Community.

Jan 4, 2008 12:45 PM Click to view kellie's profile kellie in response to: Flashorn

I of course love and welcome that you post all your info here. However, I think that to be useful to others, it needs to be organized in a logical way. So if it's a new utility, you can post it in Utilities. If it's a new security app, post it in Security. I think if we had one place where all information was posted to, nobody would ever find anything. I also can't make one place where there are no points -- it's an all or nothing thing for the whole community.

I think Techy was saying he wanted a new place to discuss programming and web development. Like I said, I'm totally willing to try this, I just want to make sure that we find the right place in the organizational structure of the forums to make sure it is easily found and used.

Jan 4, 2008 12:50 PM Click to view kellie's profile kellie in response to: Adama

Answer Line is not the right place for news discussion. That community is meant for troubleshooting and help with computer issues. Yes, generally articles should go in the community that the article is about -- security in security forum, etc. You can also use the General Talk forum for this as it was meant to be a catch-all of everything else. Even if your story is non-tech (but please no political stories), it can go there. When in doubt, post your thread there.

I understand that you are interested in more news than what we post on our site, and I want to encourage you all to discuss those stories. However, our News Discussions forum is strictly for stuff posted by PC World. It makes it easier to find comment threads for particular stories, and helps keep those areas clean for those who are only looking for comments on PCW stories. I am, however, open to re-naming that forum, although now that it is under the PC World category, it should be more clear that it is about PC World news.

I haven't seen a huge amount of news stories from other places getting posted here, but if there is a lot of them and high demand, I could add a new forum under Hangout. I want to avoid adding a lot of new forums that are little used, and fragment the community. A busy forum is a better forum.

I don't even know if this is the right place to ask this question, but here goes anyway:

How come, when someone posts a comment to a blog or document, it doesn't show up at the top of the line on the first page of Community, like the other posts to regular threads do?

Jan 4, 2008 1:59 PM Click to view kellie's profile kellie in response to: Adama

The simple answer is that it's different. Blogs and documents don't have read tracking on them, and thus don't show up when they are updated.

Jan 5, 2008 2:35 PM Click to view Adama's profile Adama

I've been taking a close look at the new, organized list section and I wanted to say it again: I really, really like the way it looks.

Also, I think that Web Browsing and Email should stay the way it is, IMHO.

Hi kellie :)

I would like more control over Email Notifications.

Once I say NO to "game Of Questions" or other popular "fun threads" I want them to stay NO cuz they flood my email.
I like to participate in fun threads but I quit because I hate having to go in and say NO every time I post to one.

At the same time, when I am answering a "Help Line" or when I am asking for help I want to have Email Notifications for these ones.

Maybe an easy way to implement this would be instead of Email Notifications being "Opt Out" they could be made "Opt In".
tnx

Jan 7, 2008 9:46 AM Click to view kellie's profile kellie in response to: snorg

You can actually do this already.

Go to Your Stuff > Preferences and you can set Yes or No when you want email notifications.

Then go to Your Stuff > Email Notifications to delete notifications that are set for you that you don't want.

If you turned all to No and then deleted all your notifications, you will never get another notification. Then you could select next to the particular thread to get email notifications for it. And you can manage/delete your notifications at any time by going back to Your Stuff > Email Notifications.

Has anybody noticed that the interface has split up? The member's avatars are now showing up on the right hand side, instead of on the left as usual, above the new, organized communities? Or am I the only one experiencing this split?

Mar 5, 2008 9:28 AM Click to view onetechbuyer's profile onetechbuyer in response to: snorg

YES, YES, YES...I would certainly participate in forums more often and in more areas if the OPT IN rule were in place!

Mar 5, 2008 9:29 AM Click to view kellie's profile kellie in response to: onetechbuyer

We're working on expanding the options, but in the meantime please follow my instructions to snorg (above) that make your system opt-in only for notifications from now on.
