How do I use Find-It URLs from PC World magazine articles?

VERSION 1 Published

PC World magazine readers have a convenient, quick way to locate content mentioned in the magazine: Find-It URLs. Find-It URLs are printed in blue in magazine articles, and you use them as you would use any other URL (Web address). First type the entire URL as it is published in PC World (beginning with the word find and ending with a five-digit code) into your browser's address field. Then click your browser's Go button to reach the mentioned page or Web site.

Much as I love the mag and the site I have to say I am disappointed with this new "Find-it" method. It was so much simpler when there was a Find-it page and all I had to do was enter the number. Now, having every Find-it URL cluttering my Address Bar, at least until I'm forced to clear out the entire thing, is such an inconvenience.

As a rule I only type into my Address Bar the sites that I visit frequently and since IE offers no way to selectively delete entries from there, being forced to type each Find-it URL means my frequently used URLs are steadily pushed from the drop-down list.

Bad move, PCWorld.

I'm sorry that you're disappointed. We changed the method about a year ago, removing the box where people entered their 5 digit number, because we found that many people were confusing it with the site search -- they tried to put words in the find box, and numbers in the site search box.

We are working on a way to bring this back that will be less confusing, but we have no immediate plans to do so.

I had a bookmark to the old "FIND" and was using it up to about a month ago or so.

Not only is finding these supposedly great downloads a hassle, once one does I find that it is a necessity to read the Reviews. Your article "Speed up your Broadband Browsing Experience" listed some "tweakers" but one of them was just trial that fact was not mentioned in the article, the other says it is for Vista your story said it worked on XP but EVERY review said it sucked big time!!!

I have almost no faith in using your recommendations now. But what do you expect from software anyway that is free or almost free? Most of it is junk, but I am always looking for the jewel.
