There are a lot of times when describing a problem does not give a true picture of what is truly happening to your computer. Sometimes, it may be best to give others a glimpse into what you see. The easiest way to do this is to create a screen shot. However, since uploading of files is not allowed within this forum, how does one go about getting the saved file into this forum?

The answer is simply to upload the file to a third party vendor who will turn the saved file into an url. This url can then be copied and pasted into this forum. Once this is done, anyone can view the image and provide any suggestions or comments as necessary.

The process is very easy:

  • Whenever there is something that you want others to view on your computer, hit the "Prt Scr" key. This key is normally located right above the "Insert" key.

  • Open Microsoft Paint. To get to this application, click Start -> Accessories -> Paint

  • When the application opens, click Edit -> Paste

  • Once the screen shot is pasted into the application, click File -> Save

  • Save the file to your Desktop

  • If you do not already have an account, create an account (it's free).

  • Log into your account

  • The next screen will give you the option to upload the screen shot into Photobucket's database

  • Click on "Browse" and then when the standard Save window comes up, click on the Desktop icon on the left side of the window

  • Select the file you just saved and click "Open"

  • Once you have added the file, click "Upload"

  • Once the upload is complete, you will be given an url address. Copy that address and then paste that address into this forum.

Now, there may come a time when you want to upload an image that you found on another website. This process is much easier since the image on a website already has an url address. When you see an image on another website that you would like to upload into this forum:

  • Right Click on the image and then click "Properties"

  • In the secondary window, you will find two Properties - Link Properties and Image Properties

  • Under Image Properties, you will find the url address associated to that image. For example, this is the url address associated with an image off of Netflix:
ht tp :// cdn-6.nflximg. com/us /boxshots /large/ 70040846. jpg

  • If I remove the spaces, the url converts to a normal hyperlink that you can click:
http://cdn-6.nflximg.com/us/boxshots/large/70040846.jpg

  • When you click on the link, you will be taken to the image

  • To create the image within the page, put ! (Exclamation Point) before and after the address. If done correctly, you should get the image:

http://cdn-6.nflximg.com/us/boxshots/large/70040846.jpg

As an alternative to using Photobucket, you can use the Community's built in insert image tool:

  • From within the reply section, click on the image insert icon (third from the right)

  • When the Image Insert window opens, click on Browse and find the screen shot you saved

  • Once you found the screen shot, click Upload

  • Once the file is uploaded, click on Insert

  • When ready, click Post Message to submit the screen shot within the Community

With Windows Vista there is now the 'Snipping Tool' with various options. Also, if you upload the image to ImageShack you do not need to create an account. Although you can if you want extra options.

Hi ChillerBaggins. Thank you for that information for our Vista users. I have not installed Microsoft Vista yet so any information that you have to share with all of us will be valuable. :D

I'll try and post something in the forum (maybe with a picture) on the 'snipping tool' using the tut posted here. It's a multi function tool with pen and rubber.

Nice, MPH!!!!!!!!

If I may offer another method, not necessarily as solid of a pic., but it works for me, and essentially just takes the photobucket step out?

What I've done is,
Open Paint and minimize it, so you can get to it easy,
As you said, then PRINTSCREEN SYSRq button for the screen you want to capture
maximize Paint
Paste
Save to My Documents.

Access the screenshot from my documents.

That's what I did to post my desktop screenshot in the "How does your desktop look" thread.

Hi, mph. I printed this document a few weeks ago when it came up in a discussion.

I have followed, time after time, the instructions you give above and it has always been "no go" for me.

That's why I had to learn to use Vista's Snipping Tool.
