Removing the Automatic Restart on a System Failure (Blue Screen of Death - BSoD)

VERSION 2 Published

There have been several recent Discussions where members state that his or her computer immediately restarted after a major issue (such as one that would bring on the dreaded Blue Screen of Death - BSoD). The information listed within the BSoD is essential in the troubleshooting process. The information could reveal something as small as a memory issue or something as significant as a hard drive failure.

There is a very easy way to prevent this from happening in the future. The steps are relatively the same in both Windows Vista and Windows XP:

Windows XP

  • Right Click on My Computer and select Properties

  • Click on the Advanced tab

  • Under the Startup and Recovery section, click on Settings

  • Under the System Failure section, remove the check mark in the box next to Automatically restart

  • Click OK twice to complete the process

Windows Vista

  • Right Click on Computer and select Properties

  • Click on Advanced System Settings

  • Under the Startup and Recovery section, click on Settings

  • Under the System Failure section, remove the check mark in the box next to Automatically restart

  • Click OK twice to complete the process
