I was on a thread the other day where a member was asking about the registry back-up utility by Lars Hederer. On his site it does say that it does support Vista but,

there are conflicting reports. One of them is from Aumha.org. it states that neither of his utilities are for nor support Vista. PLZ read what it says

So, I went in search of a utility that would support Vista and other Windows versions. Well, I did find one that does exactly that and well.It will ask to back-up the

registry or create a restore point before proceeding with the actual defrag. So, you can have a back-up and a regdfrag in the same utility. OH, and all of this for FREE.

The utility in question is called Quicksys RegDefrag from © 2008 BMSoftware Informática LTDA . It is a very light tool at 1.72M

installed. One other option this utility has is that you can also download a Portable Version. One more reason to have this in your tool box.

I will explain a bit how it works although it is very simple.

Download form site mentioned above and double click the .exe to start the install. It will ask for your preferred language, as many are support, then let itinstall.Once installed this is what you will see:

This is the front page. You will click on the "Get Information" button. This will show you how many registry keys there are to defrag.

Close page. Next , click on the "Defrag Registry" button. The next page to come up will show you the three steps to complete the defrag.

Now , on the same page click on the "Analise" button.This will take a few minutes to complete. Once finished this is what you will see:

As you can see , my registry was in need of a defrag. In the "Backups Options" I opted for a Restore Point in lieu of a Backup.

If the Analysis finds that, like in my case, your registry needs a defrag, the Defrag Button will appear at the bottom next to Close.

This whole procedure will take about 1 to 2 minutes. Once the defrag is finished this is the next page to open:

Before you restart your PC or notebook, have the utility generate a report and read through it. This is what you will see:

As you can see it is a very simple report but, gives you the pertinent information that you need to verify that it did it's job.

Now, you can restart your PC or notebook.

I did a second pass once I restarted my Vista Notebook to see if it would regenerate the same info. and tell me that I needed to defrag again.

I just wanted to make sure that this was a good utility and not just another dud. Well, this is what it had to say about my registry the second

time around:

As you can see , it stores the last info. about your use of the utility. I imagine that it will always show the last time you used it and how much

space it was able to recover.

I now clicked on the "Defrag Registry" button again to see what would happen and this is what I got:

I guess we found a good Registry Defrag Utility with the ability to Back-Up or Create a restore Point.

In my experience , this is a good utility with good options, very light and a Portable Version.

I would not hesitate to recommend this utility to any member who asks me about it.
