Today, I Will Leak An Apple Rumor

I have seen pictures of the so called Mac Tablet first hand from an  developer. For those that say Apple got in on the Tablet late, well... Hold on because this is unlike any other tablet and it will completely annihilate tablets all together. In fact, it's not going to even have "tablet" anywhere in the name. It's going to be the new MacBook Air, fully loaded with a multi-touch panel screen. I've never seen it in use- only pictures- but it was described to me like an advanced iPhone digitizer that responds with almost any instrument from a stylus to fingernails.

IF... This somehow got tracked back, my insider at  would be seeking unemployment, so I will never post here again. File it along with the rumors if you'd like, but just wait and you'll see...

Apple Crushes Clone Maker In Court

From BusinessWeek 11/14 http://www.businessweek.com/the_thread/techbeat/archives/2009/11/apple_crushes_c.html

Quote

Apple won a sweeping legal victory against Macintosh clone maker Psystar Corp. Nov. 13 when a federal judge in San Francisco ruled (PDF, courtesy of Groklaw) that Psystar had violated Apple’s copyright and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Judge William Alsup struck what may be a death blow for Psystar by granting Apple’s motion for summary judgment while denying Psystar’s counterclaims.

The only real surprise here was the swiftness and thoroughness of Apple’s victory. Judge Alsup basically ruled that the OS X End User License Agreement (EULA), which prohibits the installation of the software on non-Apple hardware, is legal and means exactly what it says. It is just the latest in a long string of ruling upholding EULAs, sometimes called shrinkwrap or click-wrap licenses.

Psystar just got what's coming to them in the California case. Here's the order [PDF]. It's a total massacre. Psystar's first-sale defense went down in flames. Apple's motion for summary judgment on copyright infringement and DMCA violation is granted. Apple prevailed also on its motion to seal.
Psystar's motion for summary judgment on trademark infringement and trade dress is denied. So is its illusory motion for copyright misuse.

There are still issues remaining for trial, despite Psystar's attempt to present everything now as being moot. Here's what's left to be decided at trial: Apple's allegations of breach of contract; induced breach of contract, trademark infringement; trademark dilution; trade dress infringement; and state unfair competition under California Business and Professions Code § 17200; and common law unfair competition. See anything on that list that will be helpful to Psystar?

Which Macbook Would You Buy?

My wife and I want to purchase a MacBook Pro. Interested in a few things. We have had 3-4 desktop tower type PC's in the past 12 or so years we've known each other.

Always end up having issues with Windows. Latest one purchased at the time you could get a free upgrade to Vista but had XP installed on it from the store. Needless to say we did not install Vista when it finally arrived. This version of XP hangs on Windows screen and requires a lot of restarts most days. So we are interested to see if we have less problems with a Mac like "everyone" says. Can't ever get back all the hours I tried fixing this one and the others.

Also we are tired of being confined to one room with a tower. Se we want a laptop to take to other rooms and and take it with us where ever we may go.

We use the computer for photography mostly. My wife is a photographer. Just mostly for editing and sorting. We store on CD's or External Hard Drive. Other uses would be the basic internet research, updating Facebook, updating blogs, and keeping some files in Word and Excel type programs. Pretty basic. No gaming or movie making. We do use and love iTunes.

So with all that which MacBook would you say is the best bang for the buck? I think we will go with a MacBook Pro. There are just so many options and some reviews I read make me more confused. So in laymans terms please....

The idea is that these documents might offer a solution to a problem that you might be having without you having to ask a question in the forum.

Wierd Startup Problem And Chimes

I need some help from the Mac experts out there.
I have a new Mac Mini (early 2009) with 2GB RAM, 120GB HDD, OS X 10.6.1 (Snow Leopard) and Windows XP SP2 on boot camp. Peripherals: external 320GB HDD connected with firewire 800, Apple keyboard, Logitech mouse, Proview 19" WS monitor connected VGA to DVI with Apple adaptor.

Last night when I restarted the system to go from Windows XP to OS X the Mini got as far as the black screen, chimed as it normally would, then stalled. It chimed repeatedly, once every few seconds, but would not go any farther. I powered down using the power button and restarted, same behavior. So I powered down again using the power button, then unplugged the power supply from the power strip, and let it sit for a few minutes. After that it booted properly to OS X, and I switched back and forth between the two OS's with no problem after that.
Does anybody know what caused the Mini to stall and continuously chime, and why unplugging it for a while fixed it? I'd like to be better prepared if it happens again.
Thanks in advance,

Issues With Mac Stuff

Well, I've used a macbook for 11 months now and, generally, I'm happy about it and am leaning towards making my next purchase an iMac (not for at least another year or two). But there are some things that irritate the heck out of me so I thought I'd make a thread for me to bring them up, but not all at once.

Actually, my hope is that maybe there are good solutions for some of them and I just don't know about them. I've already learned that people at the Apple stores don't necessarily have the right answers. A classic example was when I asked them about changing the hard drive myself. I had opened the bottom to look at it and noted the tab to pull on, but I wasn't sure if that was all that was necessary or if something had to be unscrewed first. TWO Apple employees told be to just pull it as hard as necessary! Fortunately, I double-checked online for videos and, sure enough, you have to remove a screw first that holds a bracket in place.

Anyway, my first complaint concerns when I switch from using my macbook with my Apple 24" monitor or just using the macbook screen when I travel. The location of windows can get kinda weird. Okay, except for the fact that I had one window (itunes) that was partly off-screen. Unfortunately, it was the bottom so I couldn't access the resize corner to make it fit. I was stuck until I got back to my big monitor where I could change the size there so that the change of displays didn't cause this problem.

This is NOT good. I think it is a huge mistake to not let you grab any border of a window to resize it. If I could have lowered the top border, I could then have pulled the whole window higher so I could see the bottom. But not on the Mac.

So, I asked a Genius today how to handle this when I don't have access to my monitor. He said I would have to go into the preference folder and delete the plist files for iTunes (or whatever). Then restarting it would create a new one, but the window should be within the screen size.

Uh, that strikes me as nuts - certainly the opposite of "user friendly"!

So, does anyone have a better solution for when this problem occurs?

Wake-on-lan For Mac

I have a large network of macs scattered throughout a good sized building and im looking for an efficient way to be able to turn them all on/power on from one location

With PC computers, they have this nifty thing called wake-on-lan which allows 'magic' packets sent from a wakeup caller program to power up the computer

Is there a way to set up WOL for a mac?
Let me be specific about wake on lan- Wake on lan boots/starts up the computer after being shut down, not waking from sleep
