Best Os For A Netbook?

I'm considering the purchase of a netbook PC with a 10" screen and 1Mb ram for under $400 to use strictly for internet activities when travelling. I already have a heavy and bulky laptop with a 15" screen and 4Gb ram that is running Win 7 home premium, and only gets a little over an hour's use on battery power. The netbook should be easy to carry and not require use of the AC adapter due to much longer battery run time. The question I have is what is the best OS for the netbook: Linux, Win XP home or Win 7 Starter?

Display Issue With Gateway 7426gx Laptop

Hello All,

I have a Gateway 7426GX laptop that the display is not working correctly at this time. The display shows blocks of numbers instead of the desktop. With some determination and trial and error, you can navigate enough to get it enter safe mode but it is impossible to use at this time. I am not sure if the monitor is bad or not, and Gateway is their usual no useful entity when the computer is out of warranty. Any suggestions?

Advice For New Laptop Dell Studio 17 Vs Sager Np8760

I am looking to get a high performance laptop and I have narrowed it down to the following configuration:

Core i7-820 processor
4GB ram
500 GB 7200 RPM HD
17.3 in screen

Both Dell and Sager have laptops that are almost identical when it comes to the above configuration. Although, dell has radeon graphics card and sager uses NVidia. The configured dell costs about $1789 and the Sager costs $2278. (Dell has a few cool things the sager doesn't like back lit keyboard)

I would like a laptop that will last for the next 7-10 years, as far as hardware goes. I understand that the technology may not last that long. My issue is I am afraid that Dell will use cheaper no name parts for the motherboard, ram, harddrive etc. which may not last as long as the Sager parts. Also, I don't know if they both use the same process for cooling the chip and heat is a concern. I am sure the Sager is a better machine but is it really $500 better? We use Dells at work and they are such pieces of junk, but they are lattitudes which may be nothing like the studio line. Also my husband used to work at best buy tech bench and he said it was always Dell, HP and Sony's that filled the shelves to be fixed. Of course they are probably the three most sold brands and the people buying them may not be as likely to fix their own as someone who buys a sager, acer, toshiba etc. I am really not sure what to do. I don't want to spend this kind of money and regret it 3-4 years from now. Any advice between these two?

New Class Of Netbooks

Hi -

I am in the market for a small - but cheap - laptop.
I've determined that the "netbooks" don't have enough power, capacity, or "n" wi-fi.

But there seems to be a new class of 11.6" laptops that are small, use better processors, have larger disks, etc.; but still are light (~3 lb) and cheap (under $600).
Examples are the Acer Aspire 1810, Toshiba Satellite T115-S1100, etc.

Does anyone have a "name" for this new class yet? Super netbooks?
More importantly, has anyone reviewed them ...and would care to voice an opinion on the best of the bunch?

Thanks.

DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE!! IT HAS INHERENT DESIGN FLAWS IN THE MOTHERBOARD HEAT DISIPATION AREA. MINE IS NOW "DEAD" AFTER JUST 1 1/2 YEARS. hp wants me to invest another $300-$400 just for this to happen again. Check the net, it is starting to popup everywhere! This is rediculous, and should be recalled! I also have compaq desktop that has a board issue as well, but thankfully still functions and had the backups of my very time consuming work. I WILL NEVER, EVER BUY ANOTHER HP PRODUCT AGAIN after the way their support has treated me. I am a third year computer engineering student that had three midterms due the week it died and their lack of give a darn has me EXTREMELY PISSED at this company.

Beware Of Toshiba Netbooks

I will try to make this very short. Don't buy a toshiba netbook. I bought their NB205. The touchpad didn't work right from the start. They tried to fix it over the phone numberous times and could not. So they told me to fill out this form and send it in ( I would have to pay shipping for a product that never worked). OK, no big problem so far. When I completed there online form no address ever came back. So I called them. Easy right? I spent two weeks and over 12 hours of my time trying to get the address. No one in the entire company--every supervisor in every department, knows where to send it. I got every stupid answer under the book, but the address. Four supervisors said(promised)they would call me back with the address, but never did. The vice president of this company can't even have his people find the address. One Supervisor finally assured me that you that it to a UPS store and they will know. After calling a bunch of UPS stores finally found one that had the address. I felt like I won the lottery. WRONG!! I just got a call from the repair center it was shipped to. They said "wrong address, and we don't know where the right one is". It is not the product, but the service that is most important with a lot of electronics. Toshiba is a failure. I am very sorry I am stuck with there product.

I'm new here and hope I've selected the right "Topic Post" for my question. Looking at a Toshiba Sat T115-S1100, 11.6" Netbook. Comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel Celeron M and 1.3GHz Processor type and speed. And with 2GB of RAM and 250GB Hard Drive. Computer use will be internet searching, word processing, media, emails, etc. Digital photos, turnes, vidio not a big concern. My question, I can upgrade the RAM to 4GB for about $45. Is it worth the extra money? Thanks, Ed
