Bad Virus On Laptop, Wont Boot

My girlfreinds laptop has always been slow and she asked me to try and fix it to make it faster as it was beginning to be to the point where she wanted a new one. The laptop is a toshiba from probably 2001 or 2002 running xp sp3. I noticed that she had alot of unneeded programs as well as mcafee antivirus. When i installed mcafee on my computer years ago all it did was just create a major slowdown so i decided to uninstall it, she only goes on websites like myspace, facebook, and clothing online stores and has never got any viruses so i thought uninstalling it would be a good idea. I also noticed the last time she updated mcafee or ran scans was in 2006. At first it was good, the computer really woke up and was considerably faster. I installed malwareebytes just in case and made sure the computer was up to date. I ran malware bytes and came up with pretty much nothing. The very next day she said that she was on myspace and the computer froze. She restarted it and ran a scan and found 43 infected files. She removed them and the laptop was working as normal but then a few days after it froze again and this time now she cant log into windows. You can type in the password, log in and the backround image comes up but then all that comes on the screen is a fake anti virus program. task manager will not open as well as anything alse. The first thing i decided to do is book into safe mode by pressing f8. The screen came up after restarting and i attempted to boot into safe mode. A bunch of lines or files rand down the screen as normal but then the screen flashes blue for a split second and the laptop restarts. I also tried the last known good configuration with no luck. The next thing i tried to do was remove the hard drive and plug it into my computer but the drive is a ide 2.5 inch drive and the power connection seems to be on the side of the drive so i cannot hook it into my computer. I guess her brother knows someone who may be able to fix it but he probably wont get to it for a month so what should i try doing next. I really feel bad because somehow someway uninstalling mcafee caused her to get enough viruses to make it unusable. Even worse, she has years of pictures that she has never backed up so i feel terrible. I dont understand how this happened because i dont uses anything but malwarebytes and ive been virus free for 7 months. What should i do next to try and solve the problem. If it matters she has about 6 gbs of files she has that she would like to get off of it(pictures, documents)
i think i may need one of these
any tips on ways to remove the virus, get into safe mode, other ways to get files off computer?

Parallel Malware Scanning

one of my specialties on the windows side of things is virus/malware hunting

i do complete scans of infected hard drives, and sometimes that can take days because i use four different scanners to find every last piece of malware
(malwarebytes, super antispyware, A-squared, and spyware terminator)
when a drive is fragmented, the scans take even more time,
perspective on parallel scanning- one scan is run, but 4 or more scanners are analyzing the data for infected/rabid files
im open to any suggestions on new/better/faster scanners that can do something similar to what im looking for

Hi,

I am posting for the first time here, and hope you can help me with this problem.
I recently noticed a file named XMMCC.exe in my USB drive. It appears to be a hidden fie, and only appears after i make hidden files visible from folder options -> view. I notice it first because Winpatrol softare warned of a XMMCC.exe added to my startup list. I scanned with AVG, spybot search & destroy, and malwarebytes anti malware, but has not found anything. Anyone can tell what to do with this ? Did not find anything on google search

Norton Antivirus Automatic Renewal Rates

Hello,

I was wondering if I could get some feedback on what you all think of Norton's Antivirus auto renewal rates. I currently have version 16.7.2.11 and have enabled the annual auto renewal subscription feature since installing Norton Antivirus in 2006. Last year I was billed $42.95 and this year's pending renewal rate is $44.99. Are these subscription rates close to industry standard? Seems just a little excessive when I can go to Staples and purchase Norton 2010 for 1 PC for $39.99 ($9.99 after $30 rebate). Thanks for your feedback!!

A recent PC World newsletter had information and a video on Immunet, which is a cloud AV. This is new technology (to me anyway). Has anyone tried this yet? Should this replace traditional AV? Added to it? Avoided until the bugs are worked out?
Any info will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Avg Free Edition 9.0 And Vista Problem

There is a problem regarding the upgrade to AVG free edition 9.0.
AVG in their wisdom have decided to turn off windows defender anyone who upgrades will see a new icon in their taskbar warning that it has been turned off, also I have found that if you have Ad-Aware installed it also turns off the Live Watch part of Ad-Aware.
There are several questions about this on the AVG forum but few answers the only one that can be found is that this was done with the approval of Microsoft as it can slow down boot up time if windows defender and the new AVG upgrade both run at the same time.
Both can be turned back on after booting but it is a complicated process for a newbie to computers.
I think it's time to find another good free antivirus application!!!

Security Software Questions

When a product is label as internet security does that mean that product is only good for internet security?( such as Norton Internet Security 2010). Also if a product is label as anti-virus does that mean the product is only good for anti-virus?( such as Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010) Are the so called total security protection products good as others that are label as anti-virus and internet security? (such as Bitdefender Total Security 2010)

One final question, are there websites that can tell me about the most current security products that have been tested out and review? (such as Norton Internet Security 2010, Mcafee Internet security 2010)

How To Identify If Your Pc Is Hacked/part Of A Botnet

Hello, I"ve been receiving PC mag for about a year and love it, can't say enough about it.

I've attempted to use the search function suggested in the forum guidelines (novice pc user here) but I'm having trouble summing up my issue into effective key words.

I was browsing the internet this morning (IE8, news/finance websites) and it was achingly slow. I turned on my speakers and too my surprise I heard an episode from the old NBC comedy series "News Radio" (Phil Hartman, Dave Foley) playing over my speakers. It was a funny episode and I laughed a couple of times, but now I fear my PC may have been hacked or part of a botnet. I just recently returned from my honeymoon and have used my PC about 3 times this month and fear this issue may be "aged". The more I think about this I believe I have encountered the issue once before in September, was confused and did a PC re-boot. I'm not big on downloading 3rd party apps and I can't remember every download I"ve made over the last 2-3 months (and I just ran the CC Cleaner app yesterday, D'oh). I have a window's PC running XP and the McAfee Security software that came with Comcast hasn't uncovered anything. I"ve hit up find.pcworld.com/63434 & 5.

I"m looking for any other suggestion or verification that I"m on the right track with my assumptions.

I havn't been to any sites like NBC, ABC, HULU etc... in about 2 months either

Thanks in advance for any feedback,
