Hp Laptop Wont Boot

So.. my buddy thinks I am a geek and brought me his laptop hoping I could help. And I hope you can help me as well.

I don't know whats "inside" but this is an HP Pavillion Entertainment PC. XP MediaCenter Edition 2006. Product: HP Pavillion dv60000.

He is a non geek so he hasn't added any new hardware. As far as I know he bought it off the shelf and is running a stock system.

He runs this mostly at home through a wireless network going through a router. He has two kids who also have there own computers. There comps are running fine. I suspect one of them downloaded/installed something that could be conflicting with something else.

When you turn this laptop on, it goes to the screen that asks to start in Safe Node, Safe Mode with Network, Last known configuration etc.

We have tried to boot this machine by using all of these options and it acts like it wants to boot, but always returns to this screen. I sure want to help him out. As much of a geek as I think I am, I can't even get it to boot in Safe Mode. If I could I might have a chance.

Any ideas on where I could start. He doesn't have hundreds of dollars to take this to the comp shop for a diagnosis. If I could get into it, I might beable to help.

I'd sure appreciate any advice on where to start.

As always thanks in advance. I have the laptop here so I can do anythng you might suggest.

Please advise.

New Laptop User Here

I just got an Acer aspire 7540 and I have some questions.

1. When I tried to create recovery discs, it kept telling me to insert disc when there was a disc in there. I am trying to use CD-R. Is that the right kind of disc? If so, what do I need to do to write a recovery disc?

2. Is there any way I can make this use windows instead of tabs? I am used to having windows open and don't really care for tabs that much.

3. After reading some threads here, I downloaded Avast! security. Is there anything else I should have on here? I go to safe sites. I sell handmade stuff online and I'm on those sites, a jewelery making forum and some supply sites.

4. Even before I got the laptop (today), I was getting some "done, but with errors on page", even here. What can I do to deal with that?

Edited to add: How did I get an avatar on here? I didn't load it because I don't have any pics in this yet.

Thanks in advance. I'm sure more questions will come up. Please remember, I am a technolgical newbie-type slowly and use small words. LOL!

Reinstalled Windows On My Pc,now My Pc Is Missing Drivers

So I have a dell PC which I bought back in 2005. It has 2.8GHz cpu with 512MB RAM. I reinstalled windows XP on it, all because a friend of mine installed his own version of XP with a mess of add ons that I didn't need, causing it to slow down and add frustration to my life. Well, the installation went fine, except now I'm trying to set up my broadband connection and the insallation won't complete. When I go into network adapters in the control panel, there's nothing there. It seems as if the PC doesn't see the network card that's installed. This card came with the computer, so it's not like I added it on. I've tried to update the driver to no avail. I don't have a cd with the driver updates for it. The only cd's that I have are for the monitor, and the regular dial up modem. I don't know what to do at this point. I've thought ordering a cd with the driver update on it from dell, but when I go to their website, there's nothing there for me to order. I would have to download it from the internet, which obviously is impossible. I've opened the pc, and looked inside to make sure that all of the cables were properly connected and that the card was pushed in all the way. So, any advice anyone??

Windows Updates

Whenever possible I save downloads to disc and install them from there. I have not found a way to do this with windows updates. I have had to do clean reinstall of my windows xp and then have to spend hours with my slow dial-up connection getting all updates reinstalled. I also fear the time when they may no longer be available. I have many KB files in my windows folder, but I understand these are for uninstall only. Is there any to deal with this problem?

One Step Leads To A Bad Situation Need Help

Ok the one step ..... my sons foot on my laptop. When he stepped on it by accident he cracked the screen. I tried using an external monitor but I think that the video port was also dammaged because the monitor just goes into sleep mode. I know i can get a used screen and have the ability to remove the old and install the new. But for now until I can have one sent to me I need some info off the hard drive.

What I do have is my old laptop which the hard drives are just about identical and fit. The drive from the broken laptop which is an IBM Thinkpad is a Travelstar 40GB 4200RPM by Hitachi. The old working laptop is a Toshiba satellite pro 4300 with a Travelstar 20GB 4200RPM hard drive by IBM. I am mechanically enclined enough that I can pull apart a computer and put it back together with no spare parts and still runs as it did before. But I don't have the knowledge technical wise to figure this out or even if it is possible.

I have tried swaping the drives and I get a disk read error when I try to boot up. Is this possible to do without erasing the info on the drive I am trying to recover? I know new upgrades require the software to be installed for the drive. But with these both being Travelstar and 4200RPM would the diference in GB require new software?

The other issue may be jumper setting. The drive I need info off of has "device 0" with no setting shown for a jumper , "Jumper device 1" which shows a jumper position and "cabel sel" which shows a setting position. The 20GB I am removing only shows a diagram of the jumper setting which is open ( no jumper setting ). If this is the issue is the jumper behind the label on these laptop hard drives or do you have to remove the cover. I've changed jumper settings on hard drives in desktop computers.

Any help would be great!!! As it sits I'm going to have one ticked off customer since this laptop runs my CNC. But what I really need is his contact info to let him know I will need more time to do his order. AND YES his contact info is also on the computer that was stepped on.

My speed connection is 24mbps on the desktop which cannot be moved. However the laptop can be moved and it connects at 54 mbps down the hall way. Is there either some settings I can change on my computer, I am running Vista, or can I purchase something that will help this problem. Our other major problem is frequent lightning.
Any help will be appreciated.
