I've had Comcast here before but no fiber optic yet. The cost has reached beyond my budget and DSL will have to do for now. If I could get just the internet but they make you take at leaast basic TV whether you want it or not. I guess they can't block it from viewing. The spouse needs tow sports packages and it is nice to get all the local pro sports, home or away, every game except football that has blackout rules. 18 Mbps compared to 3 Mbps is quite apparent but is adequate if you're by yourself. Add in two more router nodes and a game console, streaming can be very jerky but no one else seems to mind.

Verizon gives us the "choice" of having TV, but it really isn't a choice. If you opt out of TV, you get 25MB service for the exact same cost of 35/35 with TV ($80). That kind of strong-arming is insane if you ask me.

Hey, how about you guys starting a Windows 8 thread or something ( although I think there is one ). You have pretty much hijacked this thread.

That was never the intention... I was initially looking to see what kind of difference there was in the numbers between Win 7 and 8...

Yeah, that happens, then things just escalate. :D

I started out with 15/2 on the internet and then after two years Verizon "Upgraded" to 20/5 at no extra charge. The Bill has been gradually going up, but I think my Mom keeps adding stuff to the TV package. :P

Don't yell about a dying battery when you killed the battery yourself.

Dying battery? What is that about? I'm just saying that this machine doesn't last all that long in sleep mode, that's all. I only have about 14% wear on it and it lasts about 4-5 hours when running. I prefer to use hibernate on it though. Besides, why put more wear on the battery than I need to? Really, I don't see why I need to leave the machine running for extra time that I don't need it. It's much easier to have the OS let you easily shut down the PC or something so you can do it manually. Every other OS out there - Win7 and earlier, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, OS X - makes this easy enough to do.

I will make sure you are the first to know when I find myself in a no service area. As it stands, there has been ONE time I dropped my 3g service. It was in between two mountains as I recall, on m trip from Ohio to Texas. And I recovered service within moments. The last time I was on a train was in Europe, and yes I had cell coverage. WHY? Because that is where their traffic is. You are also ignoring comments as you see fit. No I don't trust cloud services. BUT I fully understand, and appreciate what MS is going for. There is a difference.

Would you personally store files in the cloud when Windows 8 comes out? Also, not everyone has a smartphone to tether with or a 3G modem, nor is everyone willing to pay the monthly fees for it. (as it is, that's the main factor stopping me from getting a smartphone)

No, there is no primary platform goal. The goal is to make a CONSISTENT interface that can be used on ALL MS devices. Everything from your XBOX to PHONE to PC will now have an interface that is consistent and easily recognized. That is a tall order, and surprisingly well executed. Also, I NEVER turn off my gear. I have motherboards, and CPUs that are 20 years old, and they only downtime they saw, was during MOVES or upgrades. Lately, more of them have been turned off, but only because my media center has replaced them. And the media center has seen minimal downtime as well. I do not fret over storms, or anything else for that matter. For 15 years, BELKIN has protected my equipment, and done an admirable job of it.

As I said, there are ways to integrate metro things into Windows for the desktop while still keeping a good UI for it. The metro UI is nice on a phone, tablet, or xbox, but not on a PC, period. Did you look at the mockup I made of metro apps on a regular desktop? That would work much better.

Also, why do you leave your stuff running all the time? That's pointless. The only things I have that are always on are the router, ethernet switch, and dvr, because those need to be on 24/7, obviously. All of the computers in the house are put in sleep or shut down when not in use. Yes, I use surge protectors. Still, why take extra risk when you don't need to and waste extra energy leaving power strips on when your stuff is not in use, wasting a little energy? When everyone in the US does that, it adds up.

1. If you really don't like Metro, do what I did (before I got to understanding Metro): Use Steam! - it aint perfect, but it worked as a launcher.3. Again, so it can fit a large number of devices. IE was designed to let you browse the web rather than stare at an interface. Try it with gesture support on your laptop once. It won't take long before you figure out that you don't need the UI elements for 99% of your browsing. Did you try it outside of a VM? Or did you have Virtual Box trying to emulate everything poorly? Because that defeats the purpose.

1. Things work quite well searching program names in win7's start menu, so why make it more inconvenient?
3. As I said, the gestures on my laptop don't work well. I'm not even sure I can go back and forth using gestures on it. Besides, I prefer to use the pointing stick anyway. And you certainly can't do gestures with a mouse. As it is, a slightly minimal interface like chrome's, IE9's, or FF4+'s works pretty well. That way, I don't have to click again to get controls and stuff like that. It's a lot more functional. In metro IE, I'm trying to just find basic things like the homepage setting, and it seems they don't exist. It won't support addons? (no Ghostery or ABP? Nooooo....)
8. I'm saying that the gestures don't work well on my laptop in Windows 7. Why would they work any better under win8? By the way, I don't run virtual machines on my laptop; I use the desktop for that.
9. As I said, change is NOT always better. There are some things that are better in win8, but also things that are worse and I'd like to see changed. Oh whatever... I'll just stick with Win7 then. Heck, I'm seriously considering looking into linux distros now...
