auto protect while playing

i have turned off my anti virus auto protect off while playing online games. should i do this? i do this thinking my game would run faster. is it safe?

It is ok to turn off your antivirus, but make sure your firewall is on. Antiviruses that are resource hogs (McAffee and Norton for example) are better left off when you need performance out of your computer. Your biggest worry is programs connecting to the internet when you don't want them to. A firewall will stop them from doing this, and will save you the bandwidth that the programs would steal otherwise. Just be sure to turn your antivirus back on when you are done.

this is for McAfee customers only...if you do not have much memory to go with then it is ok to turn off (intermittently) but leave your firewall at TIGHT setting. you may get prompt to grant outbound access for certain programs but you'll still be protected.now, on the contrary, if you have a gig or 2 of memory than your gaming experience will not suffer as a result of the protection status...it's a catch 22 with this topic...
