The problem with a chatroom is simply moderation. Bots can do a lot, but bots can only do so much. It really does take someone sitting in the chat room to make sure that things are appropriate. And if it's on our site, it has to follow our community standards. It also needs to have an easy-to-use interface that can be put on our site. I'm not opposed to the idea, but I'm wondering what is accomplished with a chatroom that isn't accomplished with a message board. I'm also wondering what other ideas there are to accomplish the same thing -- for example, a place in Second Life to gather. I know that a lot of people don't use (or understand, or even like) Second Life, but theoretically at least, it serves the same purpose -- it's free, it's real time, it's chat -- only it is more visual and more cutting edge than an IRC room.Believe me, I spent many (MANY) years in IRC rooms... and it all feels very last century to me. Can we do any better?I'm excited that you want more ways to interact with each other, and I want to keep this conversation going to figure out what the best way to do that is, both from your perspective and from PC World's.

Irc is last century, that's what makes it so great. I still use irc, and I'll never let it go. Something like Second Life would be a problem with some users, who have dial-up or a low speed connection, or even a low end PC. Also, Second Life still doesn't like wireless routers, so anyone who uses one is out as well.

There's one job I'd wish on no one. Unless you do it like TV, a thirty second delay, give the moderator a chance to push the big button before it gets on the screen. And even that would get you in trouble sometimes, ask Janet. Some chat rooms are okay, they will have their own set of groupies and hangouts, and then there'll be those who will lurk in the background waiting for something they see to turn the wrong way and they start flamin everyone. I'LL PASS. If I want my hair on fire I'll look at my cable bill or something.
