Since the failure of my long-time optical Minolta, I've had a Kodak, Pentax and Canon units and was not pleased with any of them. The performance was poor at best and the Pentax failed 4 days after the warranty ran out. I have since been very pleased with Nikon's CoolPix line, having purchased a 10 MP and 12 MP unit that have exceeded my expectations. My main focus was on the battery type and length of use. I opted for units that take standard AA cells and not the rechargeable ones with hard to find replacements or charging options. The action of recharging the flash or saving the image is speeded up by using the newer lithium cells that last longer too. I have since managed to buy a "like new", seldom used Minolta SLR that fits all my lenses from the previous model. The digital is good for short range but is difficult to hold steady for any telephoto shots. This is where the SLR and its 1,000 MM lens exceed anything available for under $2,500. I have found that getting the film processed for negatives only is now my choice, $3.50 for 24-28 images but they double the price for prints. Skip the prints, scan the negatives and print those I want on my own printer.

Well, 15× optical zoom with stabilization (Sony H9) is pretty good if you're not a professional reporter. And another feature that's important is if the camera offers proportions other than 4:3, like 3:2 and 16:9. Proportion 3:2 allows you to skip photolabs and forget image cropping, you can print your images directly on paper.

I just bought the Canon PowerShot SX40, and so far I love it. But then again, I'm still in the "honeymoon" phase with it. :)

I LOVE Fujifilm Finepix digital cameras, period!

I actually want the Fuji S4200 (3" display!) (or similar "S" model) , as this particular model is perfect for all around use and dependability, and because it uses 4 AA batts', is 14MP (MORE than enough for great prints up to 11X14!)can use SDHC cards, has great OPTICAL zoom (24X!), is LESS than $200, and all of my other Fujifilm Finepix cameras performed and lasted WELL! :)
