Why not review Avast! Anti-virus? It has received positive reviews in the past. I use it on my desktop and on my notebook, both along with ZoneAlarm firewall and Threatfire, and have been very secure and pleased with those free programs. I also use KeyScrambler encryption for added security. I use Firefox for my browser and Thunderbird for e-mail.

Thorough article. It's great that you contracted with a recognized outside organization for some of the testing, AV-Test.org . Can you let readers know what the other 3 internet security packages were tested? If need be, just list them in alphabetical order. Craig Kensek

Without AVG and AVAST being tested, this article is useless to me. Microsoft Security Essentials would have been a good idea too, since I am sure many people have it as a default.

I find it extraordinary that you rate Comodo CIS outside your top ten, when it was the only program able to stop all your new malware. You still seem to believe that detecting a vast collection of long dead viruses is important, whereas today's problem is with new infections not yet detected by legacy avs. Very odd also that you found it difficult to use. You forget to test how to remove the malware which most of these suites let onto your computer. That is usually expensive in time or money.

It would be better to review all the popular ones or not bother with the article at all.

How could you omit AVG or the new (and well received) Microsoft security essentials version 2? What about Avast?

Most of your articles are good, but this one is only half baked.

Perhaps I missed it, but was CA Internet Security Suite reviewed? I find it easy to use and effective in preventing and removing problems.

I agree completely with "cpalmbeck" & "andygeorge", article of questionable value without review of MS Security essentials, Avast [What gives, you gave Avast AV5 a great review in Jan 2011 pg 40], & widely used AVG products. Also, the print issue gets thinner every month and forces readers to go to find.pcworld.com for the details.

So did you test 10 or 13 security suites? The headline says 10, but the article covers 13. If you didn't test the 3 others (but lust examined them?) how do you know that they didn't perform well?
It also would have been nice if, in the print version of the article, you had listed the three suites that didn't make the cut.

Why didn't you test AVG? I have the free edition on my laptop and I love it. I think that AVG would have definitively have made the top ten list if you tested it.

Is there truly a dead virus
? I don't think so, just let one on your computer without detection and see what happens.

Was it an oversight or intentional that you left out AVG and AVAST?

Was your decision to select the 13 represenative Suite testees yours?
Are they the most popular? You left out a few notable candidates that should have been in the running. Perhaps a brief explantion for the readers as to the reason they were not selected might have been a good idea.

Why not make it a question in one of your frequent surveys to ask that very question? " What brand of software do you use to protect your PC?"

Another security suite that I have not seen reviewed in this magazine is ZoneAlarm.
I am curious why this suite has been excluded from even mention.
