My laptop is on the replacement list included in the Nvidea Hp settlement. Most of the Compaq laptops are going to replaced with a Compaq Presario CQ50. Now, I'm not very computer savy yet know enough to back up everything before I send it in. Is there anything else I should do? What about getting rid of personal information and browsing history? When I briefly found information on the replacement computer it sounded like I might be getting a piece of junk back. I bought my computer for work and had to have XP pro. What are the chances I'll be getting a basic OS back? What should I do about any other non-basic options on my computer? Like expanded memory, Lightscribe etc.

Hi. As Far as Lightscribe goes, that will depend on the CD/DVD drive and whether or not it has that. If so, then you'll have it, if not then you won't. This is not something you can move from computer to another. As for what you have on the hard drive, back up all the stuff you wish to keep, and if you made the recovery disks, do a full system recovery putting it back to out of the box condition. You did not give your computer model, so it would be hard to do a comparison. Also there are several models in the Presario CQ50 series and you didn't specify which model. They will probably try to make it as equal a switch as possible, or at least I would think so. I did find this one as well as a CQ50 215 ( which was less impressive ).

You should copy your files to something like an external hard drive, then wipe the computer to factory condition (just to be sure).
Aside from the problem, I'm just wondering - what would a settlement between 2 major tech companies have to do with a computer replacement?

Does it have to do with this?

My HP qualifies for the replacement, poor as they are. I received an email from the administrator (ComputerShare) on October 9, 2010, saying that I'd successfully registered my email address and that I'd receive future updates regarding the litigation. I didn't hear from them, so I finally went up on the site on March 20, to find that the period was closed.
I don't much like losing out because of a human or computer error on the part of the administrator, even if the systems they offer are functionally equivalent to the one that keeps burning up.
Any suggestions?
