I have a Toshiba Satellite A100 notebook with a 40 GB hard drive. I ordered a new 120 GB hard drive from Western Digital and installed it without any problems. I ran the Toshiba recovery DVD to install the factory image of XP and the other software that came with the computer. Everything looked good until I hit the finish button to restart the computer. The DVD ejected and the Toshiba screen came up. The problem came when Windows tried to load. I received a blue screen of death, and the computer cycles through this process. What can I do now. Toshiba tech support was no help. The guy there told me to take it to a Toshiba authorized service center (to pay them big bucks for something that should be simple). Any recommendations are appreciated.

How old is your notebook? If it is older than 5 years, It may have problems acessing this huge drive.Another thing is that the recovery DVD was made with the assumption that the drive you are using is the original 40GB drive. If you use the 120GB drive, the recovery program may be "confused" with this new capacity. Therefore the recovery program may have messed up the MBR and file system of your laptop resulting in the BSODs. If you insist on using the 120GB drive, I suggest you get a Windows XP OEM or retail CD and install using the conventional method.

Thanks for the post. The computer is about 4 years old. I wondered about the computer having problems with larger size HD, so I even used the option on the recovery DVD to create a 40 GB partition for C: (same size as the original HD) to see if this would work. Same BSOD. I'll try to install Windows from CD and bypass the recovery DVD.

Did your WD hard drive come with a diagnostic utility on a floppy disk? If so, try running that to see what it tells you.check the usual stuff such as; data cable (unplug, reconnect) make sure your jumper is set properly, and power cable is ok.WD usually puts out a nice hard drive, but sometimes you can get a lemon right out of the box. I would put back in original drive. then download acronis cloning software. they offer a free 14 day trial. pick up a cheap external 2.5 case and clone your original drive to your new one. install it and boot up thats it no reinstalling software.. works like a champ..
