I have two folders on computer located in the Windows folder: CatRoot and CatRoot2. I have Microsoft Essentials as my antivirus software program, and everytime the scanner comes across the following file, the scanner completely stops:

c:\WINDOWS\System32\CatRoot2.old\{127D0A1D-4EF2-11D1-8608-00C04FC295EE}-\TimeStamp.

What shall I do? I have a feeling this is a virus.

Hi Emily, That is a legitimate file as there are CAT files. Probably part of Microsoft's security update. I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi Emily :

After spending some time doing a Google "search" on
"CatRoot2.old" ( with the emphasis on the "old" ),
it appears highly unusual . It seems to be
recommended when one is "troubled" with Windows
Updates; however, there MAY be unintended side
effects . Since in your previous topic you mentioned
having a Win XP Operating System, perhaps a more
appropiate antivirus program would be a program other
than Microsoft Security Essentials ( which seems more
suited to Win 7 ), such as the FREE Avast Antivirus
Home Edition ( www.avast.com ) . Since your current
AV AND the file are both Microsoft-related, I feel
you would best get a good "Answer" from a "Microsoft
Most Valuable Professional" and there are several on
the Forums at http://aumha.net .

Yeah, MSE works well with Windows 7. Haven't seen anything concerning MSE & XP or Vista and how it plays with them.

I don't know about Vista, but I've been running it on XP and it works fairly well. That system is an old Pentium 4 and there's not much slowdown from MSE.
