Check this out: apparently there’s a keyboard now that will log you off the moment you physically leave your keyboard. Convenient or just whack?

I think your answer is in the article. Convenient it is, but for very specific users and the point is if data on your desktop is so sensitive as to be protected with a SONAR. Your family/fiancee may start suspecting something if you buy it, don't you think?

I had that when I had dial up way back when. If I got up for a bit, I would get dropped for inactivity. :D

I lock my computer whenever I leave it, but this seems a bit overkill. What if you turn to a different direction or you get up for a moment? That could get annoying quickly.

Considering most OSs have the ability to have the computer lock automatically after a defined period of time of inactivity, seems kind of pointless. About the only benefit that it might have over an auto-lock due to inactivity is when you are still sitting at your desk doing stuff but not using the computer...with this device it might not lock (depending on where the keyboard is relative to where you sit for non-computer tasks) where as the auto-lock due to inactivity would lock.

Yeah some things are pointless. I once found a button that, when pressed, puts the computer to sleep mode (it was being sold at a local store). Yes, that's all. Stupid, right?

That is not all the uncommon. Case in point, the external keyboard that I am using with my MacBook Pro has a "sleep button" on it. I have never used it, so I don't honestly know if it works or not. I have seen "sleep buttons" on various computers or their keyboards.

I could see some use for it...there might be times where you want to put a computer to sleep right away. For laptops, this can typically be setup to be done when you close the lid. Now, it is certainly somewhat redundant as you can set your system to go into sleep mode in a very short period of inactivity if you want...which would kind of make such a button pointless/redundant.

Edit: just tried the button on my keyboard...it brought up a dialog type box where I could choose to sleep, restart, shutdown, or cancel...which is the same as what briefly pressing the power button on the MacBook Pro itself does. Might have to see if it will act as a power up button as well...

Its whack, but hey if some people like it why not right? If it can help the user feel more secure with his computer then by means, he can use one.
