I am buying a handycam mainly to record video.my budget is under 15k.I am confused about which one to buy between Sony DCR SX44E and Sony Cybershot T99 digital camera with video mode.

Now, I have decided to buy the DCR-SX44E because of its insane 60X optical zoom. But what I don't understand is why is it that both camera are of same price yet one with only SD video and the T99 with HD(1280X720) video mode AND with High Quality still image.

Now,since I am buying the camera for recording video. Why is it that DCR-SX44E, an SD camcorder is same price as the T99 where T99 has much better video and picture quality,yes..it has only 4X zoom but if the video is good I am willing to change my mind.

Hi and welcome to the forums. I am not familiar with that camera, but I just bought a Samsung HZ50W a little before Christmas. It is 14 MP with 26x Zoom. It too shoots Video in HD. So far, I have really enjoyed it, but is still a learning experience. The only downside is that even with the Dual Image Stabilizer, I would still recommend using a tripod to steady it when using the Zoom ( it can get a bit shakey when Zoomed in ). The videos are very high quality to be sure. Just thought I'd bring that up if you wanted to have a look at it.

thanks for the reply. That's a great camera you've got.But my budget is little bit lower. And if you don't know which cameras I am talking about. Here's the HandyCam that I've decided to buy : Sony DCR-SX44E
and here's the Digital Cam which my sister wants me to buy : Sony Cyber-shot Digital Camera T99, because she wants to take picture and this one does both and in same price and also in higher quality. Now I don't see why not buy the digital one but I am afraid if I am missing something.I mean what's the catch? same price but the handy cam records only SD video but the digital camera records 1280X720 and also captures 14MP still images!please explain this to me so that I can decide which one to buy. Thanks :)

Hi, When you said under 15k, I didn't know you were talking about Rupees. The one thing about the one your sister liked, it only shoots 29 min of HD Video. I don't know if it can be improved on with a larger Memory card or not, and there would be the issue of battry life which could hinder you as well. If you are primarily going to be focused on shooting video as opposed to stills, I would go with your choice. I also have a small HP PhotoSmart Mz67v that does a good job with SD Video as well as stills. Only 8 MP with 6x Optical Zoom ( not in Video mode though ). HP no longer makes cameras though. With a 60x Zoom, I would imagine it would be very difficult to keep the picture stabile when shooting video zoomed in that close ( It is difficult at 26x even with the built in stabilizer ). I think your first choice was good as you said you would be mostly shooting video.

I think that means that the Digital Cam can record 29 minute video no stop. But that's not the problem with me and yeah, battery life will be a problem and another main problem is its 4X zoom. I am buying the HandyCam for its 60X zoom and ya I know it's gonna be a bit shaky but I am gonna buy a tripod too. But main problem is how good its SD video would be comparing to the digital camera's HD video ?

The SD Video from my HP Camera looked pretty good. I was happy with it. The reasons I got the Samsung were 1) It was on sale for a very good price at the time and 2) the door over the Battery / Memory card compartment is just about finished and won't last much longer. Once that is gone there will be nothing to keep the batteries and memory card in place and the camera will no longer work. With the Samsung, if I have a 32 Gb memory card in there and a fully charged battery, I may be able to shoot a full 2 Hr HD Movie. :D
