Other companies probably do the same sort of thing, but a patent for selecting text and allowing the choice to expand in either direction? I know I can do that with my iPad, so why isn't Microsoft suing Apple? Or Google, since they're the ones who wrote the Android OS that implements these patent infringements? It's probably a money issue... go after the companies that seem less likely to vigorously defend their position, either because they can't because of monetary issues, or they won't because it's easier to license.

I was wondering the same thing--in fact I summed up the article with a similar thought. It occurs to me, though, that suing Google itself might be short-sighted even if Microsoft could win. Google isn't charging for Android because its open source, so there is no revenue to tap. By going after the individual vendors and manufacturers Microsoft has a source of revenue to pull the licensing fees from. The larger issue, though, is whether the patent suits have any merit at all. If they don't, I would think Google might volunteer its legal and financial backing to help defend partners like Barnes and Noble.

This is all crap by Microsoft. When did those "generic" patents come about? When Microsoft was introducing their "Tablet PCs" eons ago? Those failed miserably as we know it. I am also curious why Microsoft doesn't go after Google or Apple directly though..Apple has infringed all the patents if I see it correctly.. It is exactly with Android OS that a wonderful product such as Nook Color exists. I hope more such products emerge from other manufacturers as well..it would be interesting to see how MS can hold up to the lawsuits..

It is tiring that Microsoft continues to assert that they are the center of the computing universe. Making web pages render more quickly is an ongoing industry wide challenge, and if the rendering speed of Internet Explorer is any indication, this patent is not worth the paper it is written on. I would really like to get the 1/2 of my life that I spent waiting on Windows back. Pooh.
