This is an ordinary thin-and-light laptop. How does it compare in any way with the MacBook Air?

looks like it's between the air and pro, since in terms of weight it's closer to the air (3.2lbs. for toshiba, 2.9 for the air) versus the macbook pro's 4.5 lbs.

Thickness-wise, it's closer to the macbook pro, though it starts at 0.72"

I have been using the Best Buy version since the first week it arrived in the store. I snatched it up, knowing that it was the perfect, pick it up with one hanc, laptop. 2 days later you couldn't find them--the salesperson said they sold out immediately. Toshiba did a really good job on this machine. Its only problems are the lack of an external volume control and a keyboard that isn't very responsive.

Actually its quite a unique machine that doesn't really line up against either of Apple's. Like the 13" MBP it has a built-in optical drive. Like the Air it is in the 3lb class instead of the 4.5 lb class of the MBP. It is cheaper than either, but in build quality compares (very favorably) to the recently discontinued plastic MacBook, which is also 50% heavier.

If I was looking for a cheap, lightweight computer with full features, the Portege would be a very strong competitor.
