The only problem is that you need Java for some things, right?

For those reasons, I installed itunes and tivo desktop (for the dvr) in a vm... basically, Adieu to Apple Bonjour!

You do, but I have found ways to keep Java out of my hair too!

Like what?

I blacklisted the auto update, and killed off all related start-up items. I manually check the site once a month or so.

edit: just to toss it out there, I do this with ANY software I have that likes to run a separate update process.

Another small nice thing about Mac apps: They tend to only offer to 'auto update' WHEN YOU RUN THEM.

As opposed to adding a hundred different three to ten megabyte loads to your startup to 'check', just in case.

FWIW, that is also a strong positive for Linux as well. But trust me, I am there with you on that one. The worst part, is that MS doesn't give people an easy way to manage that.

Oh, there are Mac apps that "auto update".

Granted, many of them allow you to switch it to manual update...but there are some that "auto update".

And there are plenty that "phone home" to check for updates...again many that you can turn off, but some that you cannot.

Actually msconfig can track down a lot of them. But you need a bit of tech savvy to work out which things to kill.

'runonce' is an excellent registry search item to try. Not for what it contains, but for its neighbors.

Yeah that's the problem for the average user - some of those processes should be kept! I wish Microsoft put tighter restrictions on things. NO, Windows Live Mesh, since I added you to the list in Startup Delayer, I DON'T want you adding yourself back to my startup list. Oh wait, that's a program from Microsoft themselves! lol I've heard of ways to stop that, but it's still much harder than what the average user would be able to do.
