Cpu Upgrade On Inspiron 1420 T8300 to T9600?

Hello PCworld people.

So I have a quick question. I have a older Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop with the Intel Core 2 Due T8300 2.40GHz processor in it and I am looking to upgrade the CPU. I am either going to go with the T9500 2.60Ghz CPU or the T9600 2.80GHz CPU. My question is will the T9600 work on the Inspiron 1420 chipset? From what I understand Dell only released the Inspiron 1420 with up to the T9500 cpu, never releasing one with the T9600 (at least from what I can find out, maybe I am wrong). Both the T9500 and T9600 support my CPU socket type (PGA478). The only main difference I see between the two (besides CPU speed) is the FSB speed. The T9500 (along with my current T8300) both run with a FSB speed of 800MHz but the T9600's FSB speed is 1066MHz. I have the latest BIOS (A10) on my Inspiron 1420; will it support the T9600? Will it cause any problems?

Hi and welcome to the forums. It MAY be okay. I upgraded the processor in my eMachines from a Pentium D 805 to Pentium D 945 and did have to upgrade the BiOS. The thing there was that I went from the 8xx series PD to the 9xx series which required it ( yes the FSB went from 533 Mhz to 800 Mhz. ). The other factor would be if there would be enough of a performance boost to justify the change. Not sure it would, with the possible exception that the increase in FSB might help some. Judging by the socket, that is an older computer for sure. I like to get as much as I can out of those things as well. :D

Yea, thats the only thing that is stopping me is the FSB difference. I mean I suppose I can still go with the T9500 2.60Ghz, right now mine is running the T8300 at 2.4GHz. Besides the difference in CPU speed the T9500 and T9600 both have a 6MB cache, my T8300 has a 3MB cache, so that should also help a little bit. Yea, I got the computer in early 2008 so it is starting to put on the years, but I mean it still a pretty good little laptop; it has 4GB of ram, a Nvidia Geforce 8400M, it is not bad for a little 14inch laptop. But I figured if I am going to spend the money I might as well, for like a $60 difference, get the 2.8GHz with 1066MHz FSB; if it will work that is. (Plus I am in college so I don't really have the money to just go out a buy a whole new laptop at this time, as much as I would like to. HaHa)

I already have the latest BIOS on this laptop so I guess its just a matter of if the BIOS dell put out for this laptop will support the 1033Mhz FSB or not.

I would recommend a new hard drive and more RAM over a CPU... If you have Vista, the slowness you are experiencing is because you have vista, not the CPU...
If you want to go CPU route, two things, I would keep the FSB matched to the chipset and battery life will be somewhat shorter- faster cpu, more power used...

Unless of course this CPU is dead/not operational... otherwise keep reading

And you're in for a real treat of wires, connectors, and screws everywhere if you choose to upgrade the CPU. I've done it on a few HP & Dell laptops, none of them were fun (headache) and I had to take a few apart more than once to get all the screws back in place...
You will need a flashlight, precision screwdrivers, screw containment for at least 20 small screws, and hours of patience. Plus you need Artic Silver 5 thermal paste to keep the new CPU cool...

Are you sure you really want to upgrade the CPU?

Whereas new RAM, new HDD, swap out, in about 10 minutes, reload windows + apps and you're good to go!

Well im running Ubuntu 10.10, so it is not Vista. I am putting a new HDD in (moving from a 5200RPM to 7200RPM drive), as for battery life, im running the 9-cell battery, so not too worried; RAM wise I have 4GB of DDR2 and I think all my RAM slots are now used up (though I will have to check again to make sure but im pretty sure they are). So if I do decide to upgrade the CPU I should just go with the T9500 then since it has the same FSB speed? Well it is still a 2GHz boost in speed and going from a 3MB cache to a 6MB cache. So it should help a bit.

Sounds like you have done your homework for the most part, and have everything else in place to help performance. One last thing I would check - make sure you actually CAN upgrade the chip, for that, you need either people who have done it with that model laptop, or advice from the manufacturer.

I tried, once, to upgrade a CPU in a laptop. It was a Compaq Notebook 100, which used desktop AMD K6-2 processors. The problem was, the individual boards were locked to the clock the shipped with. I changed the chip out with a K6-3 550mhz (from 450 k6-2) and gained nothing. The only good part, was that it was a tad cooler that way, and easier on the battery (underclocking reduces heat, and power consumption).

edit: One last note, if you decide to do this: take your time, don't get in a hurry, and take pictures at each stage - helps identify where screws need to go when it comes time to put it back together.
