Currently working on Win7 64-bit. There are some pre-installed programs in my system. How do i identify if an installed program(or a running process) is 32 or 64 bit?

Hi, Cyberknight. I'd imagine that clicking Help, About will tell you, as well, although I'm not sure if that's the case with all programs.
The easiest way to see what folder it's installed to (so you can use orlbuckeye's suggestion) is to go to the Start menu, right-click the shortcut to the program, and select Properties. This will give you the path to the file the shortcut points to.

Interesting. It appears that McAfee has both x86 and x64 modules. Photoshop, Evernotes, and Norton are all 32-bit programs. Most still are.

Hi Cyberknight,
Hi Lincoln!
Well I just got a new Compaq laptop with Windows 7 and Norton pre-installed (I will remove Norton pretty soon) My laptop also comes with a CD that has Elements 9, 4 free years of McAfee and other stuff (all of which I haven't installed yet) So, Lincoln might be right, I think they now work in 64bit too.

Dead simple, for running processes if you see firefox.exe *32, it's a 32-bit app, otherwise it's probably 64-bit

They all work in 64-bit, even if they're 32-bit.
I also just got a new laptop, from Lenovo. My first 64-bit main work PC. One nice touch: I didn't have to uninstall Norton. The first-time-boot wizard asked me if I wanted it to install Norton, and I said No. True, I had to say it twice, but I didn't have to remove the program because I had the choice to not install it. It did that with Office, as well.
After installing my own stuff, I've got 45 "items" in my Program Files (x86) folder, and 36 in Program Files.
btw, the Microsoft Office 2010 DVD contains both 32- and 64-bit versions. Even on an x64 machine, it defaults to installing the 32-bit version. If you go out of your way to install x64, the installation program warns you that it's a really bad idea unless you're writing Office Add-Ons.

Ok i get it...most of the softwares today are still in 32-bit. However they do run quite well on 64-bit system, thanks to WoW64. But still WoW64 is just an emulation of 32-bit system & there are exceptions to apps that work perfectly on 64-bit. But what about games? Most don't specifically mention about being a 32 or 64 bit game. Do all of them(released 2005 or later) work perfectly in a 64-bit environment or are there any limitations/performance issues?

OT - (off topic)
Hi Lincoln,
Well, that's good to know about the software having both 32 & 64 bit versions.
I had the Geeks at BestBuy do the first install of everything on my laptop, but when I asked them if they used the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall Norton they said no, so I had them leave it as is. Problem was that every time I booted, the splash screen would show up asking if I wanted to install it.
Moot point now, since I returned the laptop to QVC after having so many problems with the invisible trackpad.
I just went through BestBuy's website and saw a pretty sweet Lenovo for less than $400 bucks. I've never used anything made by IBM, so I'm not familiar with the brand.

My apologies to Cyberknight, I did not mean to hijack the thread.

I'm not a gamer, so I don't have any real experience (I don't need another hobby that involves starring at a glowing rectangle). However, I'm reasonably certain that if many 32-bit Windows games had problems in 64-bit environments, I'd have heard of it.

Best Buy is a great place to shop for bargains, but I wouldn't trust their Geek Squad to clean a smudged CD.
Lenovo, on the other hand...their support is superb.

Hey coastie and everyone!
Cyber, most if not all of your games will install to the X86 Program Files. If you use Steam then, it will install to the X86 files :

coastie , you will have to use Internet Explorer 64bit in order to get the 64bit version of Java.

Otherwise, if you visit the site with a 32bit browser, you will Only get offered the 32bit Java install.
To all, please don't forget to verify the update of Java which should be version 6 update 25. You can download the 32bit version here :
http://www.java.com/...load/manual.jsp
IF you use Internet Explorer 64bit then, you will need to visit Java with said browser as IE is the only Official 64bit
browser on the market.
You will need to download and install both versions if you use both versions of browsers (ie. Chrome, Opera , Firefox, IE...)
Make sure to Uninstall the Older versions before installing the new ones.(Programs & Features)
Firefox does have a 64bit browser but, not supported by Mozilla as yet.
