Here's the key.

Make it an option. Have the ability to use it like a tool. Have a tag switch readily available and labeled something like "personalized search" that you can toggle at will (or, if you want, have run simultaneously so you see your search with and without that extra serving of salt and hot sauce).

Simply doing it "for you" without giving you the option is rather slimey.

Besides, even WITH the option made obvious, most people will NOT turn it off if they like what they are seeing with it on.

And many will just not bother to change the default (on) settings anyway. You diffuse the angst from the few who would rather have the unfiltered unweighted world, and still keep 95% of the people who really could not care less (so long as they know they have the option, if they wanted it...)
