They used the original concept of "Crush the Castle" and changed certain aspects of it such as the stone to birds and the stick people to round pigs and created a conflict resolution type game with good graphics and somewhat of a storyline.

I think the whole secret to its success is comprised of three things:

1. The cute graphics and animation of the birds.

2. The easy way of controlling the game. It's not very hard to learn.

3. The game offers you quite a few different ways to complete a level.

For the same reasons Arkanoid once was. It has really simple rules, is easy to control, has various "weapons" and is about demolishing. It's like Arkanoid and Worms (living creatures are missiles) put together.

Agree with Saturn5.
I would also add storyline to the secret of their success. The game turned into an iOS devices series everyone likes to follow :)

the game makers always consider the mental calliber of its target users. they make such games that can grab people's attention. if a person is playing this game he will b to much involved in it that he will just playing this game without thinking that how much time he has spend on it.

Angry bird is one of the oldest and famous game for smart phones, it have gained a lot of popularity at that time and rovio is keeping it maintained ny consistently launching different versions.
The graphics and levels of the game are interesting and bit complicated that makes it more addicting.
