I dunno - maybe the egg. I wonder if ancestral species did it differently.

Or there is this fictional take on it: A character in a Dean Koontz novel says something like, "The first chicken was created with the first egg already inside it." So, simultaneously?

Haven't read any Dean Koontz in a long time. Sounds like something form one of his novels.

But I am certain that he first is chicken.
If we look at the scriptures and try to understand when God created the heavens and the earth.
On the fifth and sixth day when God said that let there be fowls in the air and beast on the field and every creeping creatures and of their kind even the trees and the fruit bearing trees on the second day was made as a tree with their fruits on it.
Therefore, The chicken was first made with eggs inside it and those eggs were the first eggs.

Humans often captured them alive, and kept some alive for later, in cages and pens for later meals (lacking refrigeration and cars for the drive through windows).
Some of these birds produced eggs (delicious as the birds) in captivity, which delayed the chickens themselves being eaten long enough to make even more birds in captivity. Which means a lot less trekking around whacking bushes and dragging around nets to capture birds for meals. Now they only have to be fed and watered, for there to always be eggs or meat.
They probably weren't the very first animals people kept and raised, either. But a chicken will produce a lot of eggs, where most other critters are over the fire before persistently peckish people would wait for them to breed more.
These birds came to be known as 'chickens'.
So the bird came first. And we called it finger-lickin' good.
