First build, CompUSA # 317226 mid-tower ATX case, supports 2 120 mm fans. Any suggestions as to brand and configuration?Efficient, yet quiet cooling is a must

I'd suggest going to [url]www.overclockers.com_ and reading their reviews of CPU heat sinks. Most likely, you can get much better cooling with an aftermarket heat sink and thermal paste than you'll get with the stock heat sink. You could also check out the liquid cooling systems if you got a couple extra hundred bucks to blow.Pay attention to your video card(s) also. Some of the newer high-end cards have fans that really crank out the dB's. I'm in the same camp as StormX2, though. My computer is loud. I like it that way...it let's me know everything is working.

If you are having problems with cooling there is some software for that. It is meant for laptops, but works on a PC. It is called SpeedFan, and can control the speed of your fans. Here is the link: [url]http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,64350-order,1-page,1-c,desktop/description.html_

I have that software but am unsure how to use and am afraid I might really screw sum10 up if I mess with the fan speeds. If you can give me any advice I'd appreciate it

When you load SpeedFan, it does some scanning to find a bunch of stuff inside your PC.No need to worry about any of that stuff. In one area it shows the fans and their RPM. Besides that it shows you the temps of your CPU, HDO, and some other stuff. If a red arrow or a flame is shown for one of those, raise the speed on one of your fans. I have 2 fans in my PC, but in speed fan I forget about the third one because, of course, that does nothing. If a blue arrow is shown, you can lower the speed a little, you don't want it going too fast, then have your fans bust:unsure The only other tab I worry about is the charts tab. That is self-explaining.If you need more help, be free to ask me.

Well, if you want this to be totally quiet....Heatsink- Zalman's are usually very good, depending on how well the airflow in your case is, you could get away with just a heatsink.Power Supply- This is where there is quite a bit of noise. I like Corsair's new ones, there somewhat quiet. But I do like HIPER as wellVideo Card- Depending if you do some gaming or things around that area, Go with a video card that has silent pipe cooling (If you get one with fan cooling, it will be loud)Hope this helps a bit.
