Microsoft took years and years to admit what boon 'Autoplay' was to malware writers, and there are versions of windoze they NEVER patched to fix it. They kept putting ActiveX into their browser, year after year, even though it's always been a massive wound beckoning infection. Windoze PC manufacturers still build PCs with the 'user' account granted 'Administrator' privileges by default, and nobody takes them to task for it.
And the author thinks taking a couple of weeks to come up with a response to retarded scareware is irresponsible?

Why do the apple moonies stay so loyal, beats me. I actually did own a Power PC G4 during the initial stages of OS X, when it was still a dual boot with 9. It was okay, but no where near worth the money, so I went back to my old tried and true PC game.

Apple will offer a solution faster than any effort Micro$uck ever did.

Just bec your car isn't on the top 10 to be stolen, doesn't mean you shouldn't have an alarm. Just bec you live in a rich suburb where crime doesn't ever seem to happen, doesn't mean you don't put an alarm on your house.
Security is everyone problem. The reason Windows has so many issues, has nothing to do with the number of exploits it deals with, but how many fools don't protect them selves and thus help spread them.
Now that the arrogant mac-fans can no longer say there hasn't been any threats in the wild, now that you have one...what's up now?!
OSX isn't as secure as you think. Security through obscurity is now over. Only an idiot who spent nearly 3x's the cost on hardware, wouldn't protect it with security software of some type on some level.

It's not the same. The autoplay issue was a feature of Windows. The fix was to simply turn it off. Any idiot using Windows could have just turned it off if they wanted too. The activeX issue? Again its afeature. I have never been compromised when going to pages that require human interaction to make the next move. ActiveX or any bug is only as dangerous as teh stupid user who comes across it.
The Mac is is actually more funny. Mac fans claim they don't need security software, so what idiot would click to confirm an install of something they calimed they don't need?
This article isn't about Microsoft. ActiveX and Autoplay are features losers took advantage of. But it can only take advantage of you if you are stupid or don't pay attention and don't read and just click. We are ALL guilty of that. But at least if you have some protection on your PC, nothing will happen to you.
Funny how you brought MS into this. This isn't about MS. Everytime Apple screws up, you fans try to find a way to drag someone else into it. A Apple loyalist if I ever seen one. When Microsoft has issues, I don't drag Apple's arrogant tail into the picture.
Deal with the facts at hand and stop trying to drag a 3rd party in. The focus is Apple. The fact is as we have been telling you, one day this was going to happen and the only reason it hadn't is bec the OSX platform wasn't popular enough. Now that it is, you are finding out that OSX, whose foundation is built on UNIX is no more safer than Windows.
How safe an OS is siimply left up to who is sitting between the chair and the keyboard.
Basically you have a bunch of dumb Windows users, who went and bought Macs and took the same approach to how they handle popups. They get annoyed and jiust click. That isn't smart computing. Moving to another platform won't make you any smarter. If you were dunb when you left, you will be dumb when you return if you don't try to learn to do better.

This article isn't about Microsoft and their poor response in the past. It's about Apple's poor response now. Stop trying to deflect the issue to someone else. The fact is that Apple treats their customers like dirt. They always have. They lie and deny all the time until they finally decide to tell the truth. Just like they told everyone how the PowerPC was faster than the Intel chips...until it wasn't. Same story with the iPhone signal issues and MacBook Pro screen problems. And all the fanboys give Steve a pass. This article is dead on. Apple screwed up big time and people finally got an inside view of how they react to real world problems. I thought Apple was supposed to be better than everyone else? The only thing they are better at is marketing.

Security software only protects you against self-installing malware. THERE HAS BEEN NO SELF-INSTALLING MALWARE ON OS X in the ten years that it has been on the market.

Hmmm, ten years with no self-installing malware in the wild. OS X machines STILL do not NEED security software, only users who don't fall for scareware, which by the way, security software is powerless to stop on any platform.
Sorry QUADICON/TechieXP/PrimeChicagoan, you are again spitting out your opinion and calling it fact, made worse by the FACT that your opinion is, as it usually is, DEAD WRONG.

You told us what?
Told us that security software is needed to protect a Mac? Hmmmm, security software doesn't block scareware or other social engineering attacks (trojans embedded in pirated WAREZ or in porn viewers - also immune to security software) you clearly "told us" a lie.

What was "going to happen"? OS X has still not been hit by any self-replicating or self-installing malware in the wild.

not that this is relevant to the topic either way.
Also, pretty sure anyone running a virtual Windows OS on a Mac w/o security software can still get infected w/ malware that way...probably why my old university that required all mac users to have VM software running Windows, to also have anti-virus/malware installed to even get on the campus network.
