Gotta love all the "free" reverse directories that actually do the search for free; but, then want you to pay to see the results.

All members of Scams-R-Us.

The service is marginally helpful. I tried 10 numbers not identified on my caller ID. It correctly ID'ed two of them. WhitePages.com ID'ed one number (already listed in phone book) but wanted to charge for the other number. I suppose that makes NumberGuru the better service by a hair.

Unpublished numbers are just that; no tool is going to get them.

And, as there are no directories for cell exchanges, data there are limited to that which carriers decide to sell.

The difference between NumberGuru and other white page reverse services is simply that the former does not charge for the service, while most of the latter now do.

I tried NumberGuru and it told me nothing at all about a test number, just asked me how they'd contacted me, what were they trying to sell &c. -- so they could sell that info to someone else, perhaps?

NumberGuru did offer to sell me a Background Check. How is this different from any other service of this type?

Not useful and far from free.

That description sounds, not like NumberGuru, but one of the many sites for reporting calls from fraudulent debt collections, sales organizations that ignore Do Not Call, etc..

What was the number that you tried?

Odd; I just now used it for free.

Still works just fine, and for free, for me.

Number Guru is registered by Been Verified, Inc.; Private Phone Detective, by Proxy.

You can search long and hard and you are not going to find certain kinds of phone number information for free. The more detailed information, from for example the wireless carriers, only comes at a price. Some of the paid service providers offer unlimited access on a 3-7 day trial basis for $1 but if you don't cancel it they will charge you like $19 bucks and you have to use a credit card upfront.

It wasn't free for me. It looks up the number and shows me it's a wireless number in Los Angeles. That part was free but if I want to know who the phone is registered with, that will cost me $4.95. That's hardly a free service. Deepsand, I don't know how you're getting it for free but I certainly am not.

It does not purport to be able to find all data for free.

Cell phone numbers are not published as are numbers for land lines; many cell carriers either provide such information only for a fee, or not at all.

Very many (today, most?) reverse directory services charge for everything. A few, like Number Guru, only charge for that which is not free to them.

Just tried it. Number guru verified that the number I keyed in was a land line and they displayed the town that the call originated in. To get anything else it would cost. So, free? Sort of but the information provided is useless. To obtain any useful info you have to pay. I have no objection for paying for a service but to advertise that service as free is unethical at best.

A telephone directory contains but three data elements, telephone no., name, and address, of which all, some or none may be published.

NumberGuru makes no promise beyond providing for free that data which are published.

To expect more than that is wholly unrealistic.

I tried numberguru today after receiving a mystery call. It worked just like every other site I've seen ie it gave a caller location but when I requested the caller's name, I was re-directed to a pay site.

As should be expected if the number in question is not one that is listed.
