This is just Windows 7 with Metro UI. This surely enhances the eye pleasing looks but does not improve the productivity that much.

Not mentioned in the article is that you may not be able to run any other O.S. on a Windows 8 certified machine. M.S. already has manufacturers working on chips/firmware to prevent it. This includes dual-boot. You can read more in Linux User & Developer issue 106 page 7. I only run Windows for TurboTax.

I installed it today to check it out. Now the only question is what to do with the 100 GB partition that Windows 8 use to live on? I haven't written code for a while, if I were going to get back into it, Windows 8 convinced me to become an Android developer. IT SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't understand how you would use this with a PC and a mouse... Microsoft never demonstrated it with a mouse...

I am hoping to find that Windows 8 developers have reconsidered the sound system setup. They really put the screws to musicians, composers and songwriters when they changed from XP's ability to use inputs for music. I have been struggling ever since I got WIN 7 to find a way to work around the latency problem since now I can't use ASIO drivers This"only one input and one output" problem makes everything more difficult and have spent several hundred dollars in new stuff to try to work around this limitation. It was definitly a step backward in the sound management in WIN 7 from XP. So hope they have corrected this in Windows 8.

I just hope Microsoft will not forget traditional Desktop PCs and Laptops which doesn't have any touchscreen capability - for WINDOWS 8 .. Because, it seems that Windows 8 is more on touch and I will be disappointed if Microsoft will not make Win8 a good OS for traditional computing .. Microsoft should remember that not all people have a touchscreen monitors or even Tablet PCs .. Many people uses traditional PCs and wanted also to upgrade to Windows 8 ..

so much FUD, speculation and wild rumors people come up with. Of course it will function fine with a kb/mouse. Of course it is not W7 with a Metro UI, that's like saying Ubuntu is just Xandros with a unity interface. Metro is more akin to a full screen start menu that uses widgets instead of non matching icons. Its quicker "at a glance" information. Most of the work in windows 8 is what you don't see in a pic or by clicking around in a GUI, its under the hood. On x86, all your existing apps will work just fine.

Never worry, as always, there will be plenty of 3rd party tools and apps to change the look of W8 to whatever ancient UI you prefer along with plenty of OSX and Linux complete theme and UI packages, just as there is for W7 and XP. There will be Classic shell, windowblinds, talisman, winstep..etc...all available soon enough for W8. so no need to worry at all. but is it really that hard to use something a little different? How static your lives must be

Pro Tip: Most pre-Windows 8 apps will not run on the ARM chips unless they were made with pure .NET and Microsoft makes a CLR for ARM. Otherwise programs written in languages like C++ will need to be recompiled for the architecture.

Windows is doing it again. They are only half listening to users. Also it is important to move forward with touch, but you don't make it so centric that you alienate your non-touch users. Touch on a desktop is nothing more than a gimmick.

It actually decreases productivity for anyone who does more than check their email, watch movies, and play with interactive content. It isn't helpful for most of your business professionals, serious computer enthusiasts, and serious gamers.

This is an OS for the tablet; unfortunately, it seems they also plan to use it on the desktop/laptop where it seems totally inappropriate.

I guess Microsoft will never fix all the issues in the Windows OS. But hey, an OS does not need to do that much, except do it securely!

Time to buy that Mac.

Use Linux to delete the Windows 8 partition. You apparently don't understand the difference between an OS and Application. As such, I would recommend against further testing of incomplete Operating Systems.

I installed the Windows 8 Consumer Preview right from Windows 7. Everything works as with Windows 7. To see your familiar Win 7 desktop, just click Desktop on the Metro screen. You can even Have Desktop as a Task Bar option. Windows 8 supports all the apps I was using on Win 7 including Firefox and Thunderbird, Quicken, Adobe Reader, Kindle for PC, and all other familiar apps, e.g, CCleaner.

My only question remaining re Win 8 is how much is Microsoft gonna charge for the final release when its time to upgrade from this Preview Edition.
