I wonder what people would say if this was an OS that Microsoft or Apple released? I don't understand why we need Chrome OS when you can get a better Laptop for the same price and install Linux if you don't want use windows and do more.

I have to admit, Google's Chromebook sounded really promising, but what a freekin' mess. Google needs to start focusing on one thing instead being all over the place doing everything. I'm tired of their half-baked stuff!

This was a real bummer and after 5 minutes using it I felt that I just gave away $500 honestly this review is spot on. You can get this same thing by telling yourself that you will only use chrome and nothing else on your computer. Still slapping myself asking why I bought this. I blame gilt.

Really. I liked my Cr-48 and once I see the HARDWARE reviews of the Acer Chromebook, I will choose which one to buy. You people are just to old to move into the future. Isn't that what people were saying about GUIs? "Oh I'm much more productive in DOS." "Since I don't like it nobody else should." Blah, Blah, Blah.

What is wrong with Google???... they developed an Operating System for tablets based on Unix/Linux platform with rich functionalities and then developed a browser based OS for a laptop!!!....I understand the concept of living off the cloud, but this is still more a future thing given the limitation of web apps. The implication of this approach is that Google's tablet is more powerful than it's laptop platform. is this Google's model of the next evolution in computing?...Microsoft's model computing evolution is clear (like it or not).... unify all platforms on a touch friendly light weight OS aligned towards the web (HTML5). Google's approach is confusing and makes me feel they dont have any holistic view but rather they just want to bring out something to challenge Microsoft...

I think the review is missing the point. I have a family, and I want to buy my family individual computers. I don't want to be the family system administrator. I don't want to be tech support either. I don't want to deal with security issues, virus, updates, software upgrades, backups, or lost data. The downsides I see is not being able to play Netflix, poor Hulu performance, and no ebook reader (i.e. ePub). Offline web and book reading would be very nice.

This is actually not for power user. It is for people like my mother (the greatest consumer of my tech support). She can use a browser and everything else perplexes her.

I don't see this as the future, I just see it as being forced to do everything in a browser. No thanks.

I am in exactly the same boat. I bought my wife and daughter MacBook Pros.

I agree with you Jason, living in the cloud might be a thing in the future, but at the present moment its not powerful enough and possibly less reliable as well. Why should one spend $430-$500 on a chromebook, which is pretty much useless if you don't have an internet connection? You can get a budget laptop in that price and if you hate windows that much(you opted for ChromeOS), install a copy of Ubuntu on it.

Great review. I agree on every point and now, like one of the other commentators, I find myself asking... "Why the hell did I buy this?" One thing I can say is that the keyboard is a pleasure to use, one of the best I've ever used and web performance is pretty snappy. I saw a hack for turning the chromebook into a machine that can dualboot with ubuntu. When I get a moment, I will try this.

If Apple released it, Apple's customers everywhere would declare how minimalistic it is and how they don't need an operating system. Me? I'd do that without Apple releasing it. I was already minimalist before Jobs started making it popular. Mostly because I follow the simple logic that the less there is the less there is to go wrong. Keep it simple. What could be simpler than a hardware browser. That being said, I think the ChromeOS is a little before its time. HTML5 and NativeClient are what will truly show why the browser is indeed the future operating system. Just my opinion of course.

Apple's take on this would be based on their ecosystem, something like an iPad with a keyboard and mouse support. Such a thing would likely sell, but then, it would, like all iOS devices not be limited to only running in a browser and would be capable of functioning offline. An iPad that ONLY RAN SAFARI would be loudly criticized by Apple's customer base.

It really depends how you use it. Look into using it with cloudshare.com or similar service. If you are into setting up servers and/or a programmer than cloudshare is great, otherwise look for a similar service that is geared towards Windows 7 desktop. I just ordered mine and hope it works well with cloudshare, I think it will require downloading a RDP application to connect though. My chromebook should arrive thur.
