I just purchased a new hiking GPS. The Garmin Oregon 550 to be exact. I also have a Mac and run Windows XP in VirtualBox. When I connect my new GPS it shows up in Finder as a storage device (like a thumb drive). I then eject my GPS in Finder so that I can use it in VirtualBox. When I hit the Devices tab and select USB Devices my GPS does not show up. If I have the GPS brought up on the Mac then I am not capable to use it in VirtualBox so, I eject it. How am I able to use the GPS in VirtualBox? I would like to use the GPS with GSAK to go Geocaching. Can anyone help me connect the GPS to Windows XP instead of OSX? Thanks in advance.

Not sure how it works with VirtualBox, but with Parallels, you will be asked which OS you want to use the USB device with...Mac OS or the "virtual" OS. That is what happens when I am running Windows XP in Parallels and plug in my USB security dongle for a structural engineering program.
So, I am afraid that I won't be much help...other than to suggest using Parallels instead (or using BootCamp, which should have NO issues at all).

I have the exact same issue, except I have a Oregon 450 and am trying to run Win7 in VB. Would be nice to solve this so I also can use GSAK with my GPS.
When I plug in the GPS it turns on and is mounted to the OSX. I eject it, and the GPS turns off, and Win7 knows nothing about what I'm trying to do.
From the research I have done it is because the OSX mounts the GPS and then does not let VB take over.
I'm hoping somebody may have the solution.

After further research, I found on a different site a person that solved the same issue by rebooting the host. Since I had not tried this one last ditch effort I thought I would give it a chance. Hmmm, weird, it worked. So, when all else fail, reboot.
Hope this will help somebody else.
