"In other words, Apple wants to ensure users embrace iCloud by putting it directly under their noses, and don't want to rely on them to manually activate the service, or upgrade to it."
-So you're saying I have little choice?
"However, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion will only be available for download via the Mac App Store, installed on all Macs running the current Mac OS release. OS X Lion will not be available on DVD in any way, shape or form -- making it unavailable via traditional retail channels too."
-So you're saying I have NO choice?
Typical Apple. I'll pass!

It's great that you do have a choice and you probably will be better served by not choosing Apple. You'll be happier and I suspect that Apple will be happier not trying to meet your expectations. It's a win-win. It's terrific that there are so many options for so many with different skills, demands, and expecations. It's all good.

In other words, it's 29 dollars for those who upgrade, not those who want to jump from leopard or tiger all the way to lion. It makes sense, 29 it's an upgrade cost. Well good thing I don't have to worry about that because I have Snow Leopard. For those who do, no one asked you to buy a Mac, except Apple, so if you don't like it buy something else.
