Windows 8

I have no intention to upgrade when it comes out. I'm still running XP on this machine and haven't been required to upgrade, but Windows 7 looks good and if I do upgrade, I'll probably go with that one first and keep XP around. What are your thoughts?

Hi techie,
I'm a HUGE fan of Win7, I think MS really nailed it this time around. So much so, in fact, that I'm going to be reluctant to upgrade to Win8 when it releases. If there was ever a worthy successor to XP, Win7 is it (we're running Win7 Home Premium on our desktops and my netbook; the old Toshiba Satellite will stay with XP until it dies).
Did I mention I'm a fanboy???

I think it's time to move back to civilization. Windows 7 is what XP is but, Much better.
As for W8 :

I have two desktops and between them, I am Running XP MCE 2005, Vista, and Windows 7. I just got around to changing the default boot in this thing from Vista to Windows 7 as that is what I primarily use. Windows 7 is a great OS and I am loving it. When they took Windows 7 and put it out there for all to try, that was a good move on the part of Microsoft. They actually got a very good OS out of the gate because of the feed back from those using it.

When Win8 comes out, if it's good, I'll likely get a family pack upgrade and use it on my laptop and desktop (since they're fairly recent), but the Pentium 4 machine in my house will stay with XP until it dies, unless something lighter-weight comes out. It's time to replace that sometime anyway.
Windows 7 is pretty good though....
I wonder if, once the betas come out, if it's worth actually installing it on my PC. With win7, I installed it in a vm because I couldn't be bothered to try it on the actual machine (I had xp at the time).

Well... from my W7 beta experience on my laptop I managed to BSoD crash Win7 over some of the strangest things because of various software/driver incompatibilities... I managed to corrupt some pretty important stuff just by using the system. If I remember correctly, I got this message on Win7 x64 Beta 2- Windows has encountered many disk and file errors, it is highly recommended to run Disk Check to maintain system integrity. (This was not a virus infection) I ran Chkdisk it and it did some serious filesystem repair. Took about 10 minutes to complete.
Install Win8 on a separate partition... Just in case if you need to revert back to Win7 for repairs, oops moments, or to troubleshoot a BSoD for something.
But dual boot W7 and W8 should be painless... just knowing my ability to find windows bugs I'll be sure to post here about them as well. After W8 is released, Sinofsky is going to be shaking his head wondering why M$ hasn't hired me yet

What about people who don't care about touchscreens and all-in-ones? Like many of the people here? I'd prefer to have a nice big mid-full sized ATX tower with tons of upgradability and power. NOT something that's compact and looks good, like an all-in-one, or, for that matter, a tablet.

Haha! So true! Kinda like running sudo rm -Rf /etc on a beta of linux (never do that when tired) bad things happen... I'm beta testing Nod32 v5 for Windows, so far it hasn't quarantined any critical windows files yet... but there's always that one bug in the AV that will see a windows file with the same signature as some obscure virus and thus obliterating my system

I've heard of AVG quarantining system files before.
Even though vista was crappy, I had no issues with important data when I used the beta on my pc (NOT in a vm).

I remember trying Vista Beta1 it looked like a polished XP that ran slower than a paralyzed snail. I so wish I had kept the ISO's for experimental purposes/more powerful machines.... When I tried Beta 2 the installation failed so badly it reverted back to XP... I also noticed that 512MB of RAM was nowhere near enough to run the Vista Betas...
But yeah, I am preparing my Win8 gauntlet with various AV's, drivers, computers, and some test hardware that have been known to crash Win7 Beta.

But with activation nowadays? I guess that'd be a legit use for an activator.

You know me... I'm fascinated with Older OS's. I've been running Windows XP since 2004 and plan on running it for a while. Eventually, I'll upgrade.

I'm half tempted to install the Windows 7 beta with the 30 day trial in an VM just to mess around with things. I have plenty of hard drive space and wouldn't mind giving it a shot.

Yeah, my dad bought me a copy of office 2007 for christmas one year, and at the time I was running the 2010 beta. (They weren't offering the free upgrade yet) Dang it!
How do you guys think the system requirements will compare to w7's? I hope it'll run just as well (or better) than w7 on my netbook. If so, I'll likely end up upgrading both of my machines.

Ehh...well it is supposedly designed to work better with tablets, but then again, who knows. W7 definitely didn't work well on netbooks though, especially with their "starter" edition. Thast why I have XP on netbook
