Checking the 'Use small icons' in taskbar properties will make it exactly like vista. Will lessen the user-friendliness of pinned apps though.

I have ditched the 7 taskbar for "Free Launchbar." One is able to change icon size, icon spacing, change icon to whatever you wish, how many menus off-shoot from the taskbar, and many other options. You can still get this excellent alternative free of charge. Get it at Cnet.

I have NO idea why anyone would want to do that...it is rare that I have an unknown icon there, and if I do, I'm going to have it figured out after about a day of use anyway...

Meanwhile, once I got used to win7, I found I hated XP's taskbar whenever I used an XP machine, as things get cramped when I have several programs. I sometimes have 6-8+ things open at once, with Win7 that's no problem, but with XP it's a bit of clutter.

I prefer to have my task bar at double-height and restore the 'Quick Launch' bar (and set those icons to 'small').
Then I've added (and collapsed a couple toolbars. This all gives a lot more places and space for active, inactive and systray icons.

I use combine when full, and I think it's easier to change windows of the same program that way, since each one has its own icon.

The tip is useless for Vista. When I click on the empty area of the taskbar and click on Properties, the only choices I get are Lock the Taskbar, Autohide the Taskbar, Lock the Taskbar, Keep the Taskbar on Top, and Show QuickLaunch.
The computer came with the Taskbar set to show text and with the items combining when crowded. There is nothing I can do to change that.
