I thought this would happen in 6 months in 1999. Twelve years later is starting. My vision has been that some day soon we'd not need servers and technicians in our offices. Computers would be plugged into a socket in the wall the same way we had telephones plugged into a socket in the wall. If we moved from Hong Kong to Hackensack nothing would change. We'd plug in our computer and all our data files, email, etc would be there just as it was. No IT department would need to move with us, because all our assets would be in the cluster, no called the cloud.
It's finally taking shape.

I don't believe this. I've been using Google Apps for over a year now. The performance is mediocre to poor, and the service is non-existent!

@Mano: Don't doubt you, but I'm sure you don't use a many of it's "higher" functions.
The more useful (and newsworthy) statistic is how many of the alleged "3000 new users per day" are still using it a year later....

It should be noted that Google, Yahoo, and others *never* retire new users who signed up, used the service for a while, hated it, stopped using it, but never deleted their account. My guess is that these "dead users" comprise at least 50% of *all* the .com membership numbers.

@ronin7752 What "higher functions" are you having problems with? I provide tech consulting and development services to small and mid-size companies. Over the past several years I've moved about 20 companies to Google Apps - they use a variety of Docs, Gmail, Calendar, and other services. Most recently several began using Google Voice.
Not one of my clients have left Google Apps, or even considered it. I have heard exactly 2 performance/accessibility complaints that were not ultimately identified as a local networking issue.
As the article states, my clients were initially drawn to the cost saving, which was real. But the uptime compared to local mail/Exchange servers has been a huge benefit.
