Folding@Home doesn't sound very interesting, but your favorite website or forum may have a "folding team". It's actually kind of exciting to see who can work the most units (a competition of computers). Clients are available for CPU's, multi-core CPU's, nVidia and AMD GPU's (CUDA and/or RadeonHD 5 and 6 series).
For PDF, I'd recommend Sumatra PDF. It's a tiny little app (free and open-source) that views PDF's on Windows. It's fast, slim, and not bloated like Adobe, nor does it stuff ads in your face like Foxit.

I want to know how BOINC is a must have download for school. It doesn't help the student in any way. I think some of the PC World editors make money off suggesting BIONC because they suggest it a lot no matter what the topic is.

Microsoft Security Essentials seems to be better in my experience. Avast is still quite good though.

desperate for articles?
Judging from:
(1) how many times a single article appears in Every PCW E-mail,
(2) the same article appearing (again several times) in other PCW E-mails,
(3) the Volume of Way-Outdated articles that resurface again & again,
(4) the fact that there are more cell phone articles than computer articles
(5) the large number of dig. cam. articles
AND
(6) PCW's recent article on a custom built Batmobile with a REAL Turbine engine
Your answer is Obvious!!!

If you are looking for free app that will allow you to create PDFs, the best are cutePDF, and PDF Complete. cutePDF has the smallest presence on your PC, but its limited to a PDF printer. For reader and PDF creating, PDF Complete is your best option.

Should include a cloud file system like Dropbox. Lots of college students still running around with flash drives...

I've the same opinion: Microsoft Security Essentials seems more reliable. Skype can distract the attention from studying subjects. And we prefer PDF-XChange Viewer Free for read/edit PDFs with the excellent search, editing, commenting, highlighting, lightweight, an easy-to-use UI.
