Has the iPod been synced with another computer before?
Is this a Windows computer or a Mac? I am kind of assuming the former since you said that you installed iTunes (Macs come with iTunes installed).

I was under the impression iTunes works on a 1 way street - the PC/Mac to the device and never the other way around. In order to retrieve songs from the iDevice, you will need to search online for free software to rip music from the iDevice to the PC - then as Ian0.sky0 said, resync the ipod to the newly created iTunes library.

If any of those songs are from another account it won't let you sync them to your ipod. If you transferred a song of an album from a friends account then d/l the rest on your account, you have to delete the prior song. itunes will think the whole album is from your friend and not let you sync. Have you tried just resetting the thing or formatting the HD on your ipod?
