I got a generic thumb drive from someone, I plugged it into my laptop, copied some files over (and set it for fast transfers, not quick removal), then put it in sleep, resumed, and then shut down the pc, and removed the thumb drive. I plugged it in my desktop, tried to copy stuff to it, and got errors that it was read only. I tried uninstalling it, didn't fix it. I tried several times, all failing. I tried the little scan/fix errors thing (in the drive's properties), didn't work. It can't be a registry thing though, unlike some guides suggest, as I plugged in 2 other thumb drives and both worked perfectly as usual. Huh? Also, I don't see any write switch on the drive, like some suggest. Odd...

You might have to format it.

I tried and it just sat there, not going anywhere. I just got rid of it.

Hi, Brian.

From what I've read, when flash RAM wears out, it becomes write-only. I've never actually seen this, but I've heard of it.

If so, that thumb drive was REALLY cheap. I only used it once or twice.

You bought it new? I guess I assumed someone had given you an old flash drive.

No, I got it from some summer camp thing. I figured they weren't exactly quality, but still...

Oh, a summer camp. That explains it. Sun and fun wear down flash memory. This is especially true if sand is involved, since it makes the silicon want to return to its natural state. Posted Image

Seriously, I think you got a lemon.

A computer camp. If I'm always posting on a computer forum, what other kind of camp would it be? :D

I've put my thumb drives through the washing machine 3 times and they all still work. I don't think those things are that weak.

I'm old-fashioned. I still associate the word camp with outdoor activities in a natural setting.
