The study fails to recognize that IE is the default browser on most computers. Thankfully PC World mentions that (even with an anti-Microsoft sentence right under it). Those who are probably higher up on the IQ scale probably change and customize their browsers more, therefore having the higher IQ persons using non-default browsers (FF, Chrome, Opera, etc...) BTW I used to use Firefox and Opera during the IE6, IE7, IE8 days, but I have to admit, Microsoft did a damn good job with IE9. It's a shame most people don't bother to update their browsers.

Is someone at PcWorld trying to attack Microsoft? This is the second article published within a week that is basically the same. This really is becoming a lame site!
Anyway, as someone that has extensive experience with IE-6, IE-7 and Firefox, I have to say that I think the whole subject is stupid and has nothing to do with IQ or intelligence >>> it's usually just not worth the minor effort required to install a new browser. I mean that this is on the same parallel for the quest of the ultimate stereo system 0 A $200 system provides 98% of of the capability & response of a $1000 system, so is that added very few percent worth the effort (money)?

This site is seriously on it decline to SUCH of the year:

I kind of like IE9. Between Chrome being terrible in every way and Firefox constantly nagging me about updates and failing to render MSDN properly it seems like a reasonable option. I get updates transparently through Windows update, it renders MSDN properly, and it isn't complete garbage like Chrome.

I laughed out loud when I read how dumb I am. My IQ on the WAIS ranges between 125 and 142 depending on how much sleep I have had. Some days my mind is like a 100-watt bulb and on other days like a 150-watt bulb. I chose IE9 and Google for clarity, kinda like the difference between a plain pretty woman and an ugly one wearing tons of make-up. While Firefox and Opera have their attractions, IE9 is a basic get-through-it vehicle. Of course, I'm 63, and maybe like Columbo and his old car. Made for a good laugh. Thanks. -Meticularius

Screw you Cringely. I use Internet Explorer and my IQ is in the 130's. This article is an insult.

To equate IQ scores with choice of browser it simply wrong... it has everything to do with how interested any given user is in things techie.

Your average consumer doesn't know the difference between the browser and the actual OS... to them it's all one and the same. They don't even begin to 'get' it.

Does the fact that I use Thunderbird and Uniserve make me smarter than someone who uses Hotmail and whatever their default mail client is? No, it just means they are not interested enough (or don't even know they have choices)in tech to dig any deeper than what apps are defaulted on their particular systems.

Just how stupid are churnalists, Mr Cringely? Enjoying that egg on your face?

Say what you want about IE. I like it and I'm not changing to any of the other options, all of which I consider less desirable.

Chrome is crap and full of security holes. Firefox is OK. I prefer IE. And my IQ is in the top 5% percent of people. It's just my preference.

Well, if they're XP users (still a majority of Windows users), they would also have to update their OS, and probably their computer, too, since IE9 only runs on Vista/7.

Expensive, time consuming, and well above the technical capabilities of many people (without help).

There are still quite a lot of people who are completely helpless when they have a brand new computer sitting directly next to the 'old' one, facing the task of transferring their files (the ones they never backed up even once). Let alone their internet shortcuts, email accounts and other preference, or all the passwords they allowed their browser to remember, then promptly forgot, or the software licences that they paid for, but can't find, and can't log in because they don't know what their account credentials used to be.

They're not (necessarily) 'stupid'. They just don't know how to do anything with that magic box, beyond simple rote tasks.
