It all depends on the application. Normally it is one set price but that is not the rule. The price is set by the manufacturer of the application and if they feel they want to charge a monthly fee, then they have that right. 8)

Shareware programs are usually a 1 time purchase, and have additional purchase agreements when program updates are released and so forth. You'll see more monthly fee's aiming towards music downloading services and other programs that require you to have an online subscription to something.
