Laptop computers come in variety of sizes for many different reasons. The size of the laptop that you will purchase will depend on what you are using it for such as business, school, home, etc.

Netbooks are one of the smallest PC's available besides tablet PC's. They were very popular when they were first introduced to the market but are being overtaken by much more powerful 10-12 inch laptops that are more affordable. Netbooks are more compatible with home-only use rather than business or school use because of the low memory storage and no disk drive. As capacitive tablet pc are more fit for business. They can also be on more of the expensive side for what it can provide for you, we advise you to steer away from netbooks and get more for your money.

Hi, Eudora.

I hate to say this, but there are several inaccuracies in your post.

Netbooks are not being overtaken by "more affordable" laptops. Indeed, netbooks are the cheapest laptops available. It's tablets that are killing the netbook market, because they're even more portable. Ultraportables, which are, in face, "much more powerful 10-12 inch laptops," may also be hurting the netbook market, but they're much more expensive than netbooks.

Although some of the first netbook models lacked hard drives, that didn't last long. They virtually all have them today. Tablets don't have hard drives, and neither do Chromebooks (which are not likely to take away anybody's market).

Another important issue concerning the size of the laptop you buy is how much carrying you plan to do, and your own physical fitness. I have back problems, so I always go for an ultraportable.

Hi,

First you should answer the question if you REALLY need one. The idea behind laptops was to make your PC portable, but now you have plenty of portable devices, even smaller than laptops and with internet and computers are all around you. Ninety nine per cent of world hotels offers rooms with internet access, often broadband, so you don't need to carry an extra case for a laptop. In my opinion laptops are for workaholics who love to take their work home. I say only the army, die-hard CEOs, journalists and reporters need them but tablets are becoming popular with the media, too. And it's hard to imagine a presenter reading breaking news from a huge desktop. If you want to buy yourself a laptop you should possibly purchase one with a webcam and additional headset (Skype!), as did my aunt. If this is your FIRST computer a laptop may do fine, but if you already have a PC you don't need one. Laptops can barely be upgraded, certainly NOT to the extent desktop PCs can, which is another drawback. And finally, MOST people use laptops for watching movies, playing videogames and listening to music while on the way, which IS overexpensive, waste of money in fact.

Also, laptops are good for people who do a lot of typing. I took a netbook so I could post on the forums while away. That would be hell on a tablet. I still use my desktop as my powerhouse though, again, for the reasons of upgradability.
