although the win7 start menu has a few new features that the previous versions do not, it is still archaic.
i really believe that microsoft continues to miss the targets,
whether intentionally or inadverdently should be the point of discussions.

Thanks for the tips, for most users these are great tips! This is almost how I have my Start menu set up, except I feel that if I am to play a game, I have the time to go the long way through Start>All Programs>Games rather than having a link right there on the right-hand side of the Start menu.
Also I don't have my 'Run' command because the 'Search' bar at the bottom acts the same, 'Search' is just a 'Run' built into the Start menu.

Your comment is useless without something to back it up. What specific targets is Microsoft missing in the Windows Start Menu? What would you suggest to make it better?

I found rather than using the start menu it was easier to just create tool bars for the programs I run. I have a desktop, media, office, internet and playlist toolbar. I have no icons at all on my desktop and only use the start menu to get to my games. It's so much easier and faster.

Bring the Quick Launch Toolbar Back in Windows 7
1.Right click the taskbar, choose Toolbars / New Toolbar
2.In the folder selection dialog, enter the fllowing string and click OK; %userprofile%\Appdata\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
1.Turn off the "lock the taskbar" setting, and right click on the divider.
2.Make sure that "Show text" and "Show title" are disabled and the view is set to "small icons."
3.Use the dividers to rearrenge the toolbar ordering to choice, and then lock the taskbar again.
