I had an hp printer 3180 Photosmart that I was happy with. Last week it stopped printing. I replaced the cartridges and still the same result. I bought a new canon printer. While I was at the store one of the employees said he heard that HP was including in their updates software that check if you were using an HP cartridge & if not the software up date would disable the printer. Has any one else heard anything like that?

If that were the case, I'd seriously reconsider buying HP products in the future, especially printers. I bet plenty of other folks would do the same which makes me question the legitimacy of the employee's comment. It more sounds like they convinced you to buy something new from their store. Looking for answers, I did see a few reports about messages reporting non-HP installed cartridges, but nothing I read said the printer was afterward disabled.

I'm not a printer tech (besides networking), so I don't keep up with the latest news. I find that I utilize my HP All-in-one less and less as time goes on, but that's just the changes of time. I am interested in any detailed reports on this.

HP holds a lot of their hardware handshaking details secret. This could be the case where you are using a "compatible" generic repalcement cartridge. I reuse and refill my HP cartridges with excellent results. The generic ones are just as expensive but don't last as long nor do the print outs look as good. I print, scan and copy with my HP5500 all in one unit on a daily basis and it has been one of the best I've run across. I've had Canon, Lexmark and Epson units but the quality is terrible and they usually fail within six months. The mfgrs are happy to replace them but don't want me to return the bad unit which is a big clue that they are also aware they are selling junk.

I have spent the last couple of years refilling cartridges myself. I also keep replacement cartridges around because the refills stop working after awhile. I bought the canon on the recommendation of the person I buy my ink from.

And how long have you been using this HP printer? I used to have 660C DeskJet (and I stick to HP) and, after 13 or so years of intense use, it said "enough" and broke. I only heard every manufacturer recommends its own cartridges and warns not to use refillable ones. I say it's just another conspiracy theory. The only thing they can do, if at all, is to make the printer accept only HP inks, like circuitry or something. Did you try to use refills with Hewlett Packard? And HPs are always a GOOD buy.

Generic refills seem to work the best for me. The third party cartridges can lead to trouble. HP intentionally puts little chips inside and there are some patents that they hold close to insure that only their cartridges work properly. Some handshaking and ink level resets seem to be the biggest faults that help to insure their dominance over the market.

I have a PhotoSmart C5180 AIO and I just use the the 02 cartridges that it calls for. I can't say as I've even seen any "Generics" for that particular cartridge.

I had problems with my HP deskjet before and we used a refillable ink cartridge. It broke. So we bought another and we never put any other cartridge except HP originals.

My last printer purchase had to be all in one due to space availability. I looked around all the stores and looked over most of the popular brands and their mechanical, physical make up, especially the ink cartridge and its refillability. I picked the 5500 unit and have been very pleased. I liked, I should say the kids liked, the Blue Tooth link for their phones. The scanner takes some time on the higher resolution settings but that's to be expected. The loading tray will hold regular copy paper, photo paper, 4X5 and 8 1/2 X 11. It has an upper tray for the smaller photo paper and even writable CDs. It is a turn-around paper path but not that severe to damage glossy media

That's a nice printer. I think HP printers are durable and very effective.

Surprisingly, from what I've seen, HP's driver support is pretty good. There are some HP Laserjet 1100 printers at my school, and HP offers Windows 7 64-bit drivers for those. (fyi, just to give you an idea of the age of that thing, that model doesn't even have a USB port, just parallel)

Hi amphi! It is definitely right that HP printers are durable and very effective. They allow for application processing to run faster. They can increase office productivity in a space saving design.

True about the chip, I had a HP business Inkjet and some how loaded software that over rode the chip and my ink cartidge lasted until it was absolutly empty. Now I am trying to find some software for HP photosmart 7510 printer that will do the same thing, any ideas?

You can sometimes put tape over a sensor on the cartridge to fool it into using a cartridge that's "empty".
