Who would buy it? IBM dumped their PC business years ago. Dell?? Not likely.

They're not selling it... Yet. They are just separating it from HP as a separate business as a subsidiary. I do agree with your logic though. They are likely to sell it. For now, it's just draggin down their earnings and they want it off their books.

A spinoff means that the shares in the newly separate PC company would be distributed to existing HP shareholders in proportion to their HP ownership. So, there does not have to be a willing buyer, or any agreement on valuation.

HP should also sell off their peripheral division. Maybe some other companies will give those divisions the attention they deserve. Presently, peripherals come with a high risk of becoming "orphans" very quickly after being released. Just try to get drivers/support.

Let HP focus on their failed tablet and large-corporate oriented hardware.

IT speaks volumes as to what we can expect in future quarters as well. This is not exactly an endorsement of their future sales. Truly they are going the way of IBM.

Ironically, it wouldn't be dragging down their earnings if they made decent products (like they used to) -- so "switching their focus" to different products isn't likely to make them more profitable in the future, either.

Of course this makes it more confusing to buy a tablet - now. This reminds me of buying my first computer (who needs more than a 520MB HD?)the technology kept changing so quickly that I finally just closed my eyes and jumped, updating my computer every 3 years.

Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say. HP has built nothing but junk for the past decade or more. Their printers used to be fairly decent, but their computers have always been junk. I am glad their tablet failed. Their PC business has been a slow-moving disaster for years. It would not bother me at all if they completely exited the IS/IT business altogether. They cheated me out of quite a bit of money with a laptop they refused to repair even under warranty, and they were very rude about it. Their tech support is just plain stupid. That's only two reasons why I reiterate myself, good riddance to bad rubbish!!!!!

I remember when Packard-Bell was the dominant PC maker. Now they are nowhere to be seen. Last I heard was they were still selling PCs somewhere in Europe.

There are companies that seem to do everything well, and there are companies that seem to do just one thing well. HP needs to decide which it wants to be... There's nothing wrong with doing one thing better than anyone else as opposed to trying to do everything and doing it badly. When it became obvious to IBM that the PC industry had gotten away from it; they left the market and went back to their roots being a behind the scenes business company - a company that makes it possible for business to do business - and they're thriving like gangbusters. HP should emulate IBM in my opinion.

All those morons who bought a TouchPad deserve to be left on their tech desert island.

More blood on the iPad's screen.

Packard-Bell was once the king of junk computers. They sold them like crazy until people finally caught on to the fact that they were throwing their money away. So PB left the country. Then hewlett-packard comes along to replace PB as king of the junk computers. Now look what's happening.

To illustrate one example, I worked for a company who was Dell all the way for many years. There were only occasional problems that were quickly resolved by Dell. Then a change of command brought a change to HP equipment. From day one there were major problems and HP was at a loss as to how to deal with it all. Within a few months Dell was back in the house and HP was gone. The problems also were gone. I am not saying that Dell is THE company, but compared to HP, Dell (and other companies) is the absolute clear winner from the start. My advice is to stay away from HP in all its shapes, forms, and manners.

perhaps it was your own bad attitude and people skills on the phone or just your inability to understand broken bad English.
