Hello,

The project is scanning a quite large volume of typewritten manuscripts, sizes ranging from approx. 5" x 8" to 8.5" x 11". The pages are in binders and may only be scanned one at a time, an automatic document feeder does not meet our requirements.

Scanning may be done at 300 dpi, as this is good enough quality and time will be a very important factor.

Price range. Max resolution for scanning will be 300 dpi, no film scanning required. $500 - $1500. Speed of scan is of highest importance.

Scan speed is highly important. Currently with an Epson Perfection V300, scan speeds are approx. 20 seconds (grayscale), 30 seconds (color). Scan speed is then, now, 2-3 images per minute. A scanner (at 300 dpi) that would allow triple, quadruple, or more is very much desired.

No high depth required, i.e 48-bit.

Many Thanks!

You might need to look into some sort of Xerox copier system that can also serve as a printer and scanner over the network. The one that I have used as school definitely scans documents fast. But, then I am not sure how well such a system will stay in your price range...you might have to talk to a Xerox rep to see what options there might be.

I suspect that "consumer" grade scanners are not going get you much better. My HP OfficeJet Pro L7780 (basically what you might call either a high-end "consumer" or low-end "small business" all-in-one) scans at about the same speed as what you are getting now. When I got it, it would have been just a hair below your low end of the budget.

End result is that you might need to be talking to various copier brand reps to see what they have to offer.

Alternatives:
1. COPY the manuscripts into a multifunction machine or dedicated scanner, to your computer. Bear in mind that scanning speed is faster if you're not creating searchable text. But why scan if you don't want the text to be searchable? If not searchable, scanning is about 1 second per page. But if you need it searchable, then you are pretty much stuck with 20 seconds a page. A dedicated scanner (fastest one I know is Fujitsu S1500, which I just purchased at Amazon) or a multifunction scanner (like Brother MFC line, I just got an 8480DN) will cost maybe $400 or less, new (that's what I paid, per machine).

2. HIRE someone to do the scanning, if you're not concerned about privacy of the material. That might save you time, as they might have industrial-speed scanners, since they do it for a living, and you don't. Make sure you specify whether you want the result to be searchable, or not.

Yell at me if I'm unclear. I have gone through the same issues, and these are the best alternatives I can think of, to offer.
Wildly Insane Now Dumb Or Willfully Stupid. :)

Hi,

Try HP Scanjet 7400c. You can scan i.a. Legal format with it.

And thirty years ago Anna German, a great Polish singer, died. She had magnificent voice and one of the asteroids between Mars and Jupiter is named after her. You can listen to the singer -> A. German and A. German 2
