Checked the SMART status of that 'older' drive? Might be crawling toward its grave. Be sure to backup those VMs.

I don't know what happened there - I ended up shutting down the PC, and then trying again, and then it worked ok. (I still get queue lengths of about 5 or so when the virtual OS is booting though.) I doubt the drive is dying - smart and HD Tune say it's ok, and it hasn't been used all that much (it was in a nas server for a while, and that was only turned on for backups, then the nas itself failed, with the hard drives in it being completely affected).

slow laptop hard drives have 15ms or higher seek times. Is it really hard to imagine a computer requesting more data than those drives can deliver? Then the requests continue to pile up. Most queue depths stop at 32 though.
