The real reason some people are annoyed at this, is because it means people can't shill and astroturf behind hundreds of fake accounts.

Thee tricks, creating pretend fanbases and momentums are their staple diet of PR..

Microsoft are huge in this area, for example, they can create a fake fanbase of Xbox owners and get 30m dipshit owners to follow them into purchasing the worst consumer item of all time. The exact same thing is repeating itself again with Microsoft and their new Windows Phone platform that nobody cares about, there are fake people selling it's virtues all over the place.

I've always thought of Facebook as a public confession booth. Was Schmidt suggesting that Facebook is just for those with something to hide??????......... LOL Where is this going?
But I think you've hit the nail on the head, Ed.

Anyone who believed Google could fulfill its mantra doesn't know a thing about capitalism. Anyone who didn't know Google (or Facebook) doesn't believe in privacy hasn't listened to Eric Schmidt, et al.

Then again, most people can be followed at least some of the times.

Am I the only one that wonders if Schmidt is just a little TOO politically connected?
Wouldn't it be nice for a government to know that much about you?
Maybe I am just getting paranoid in my old age! But dang, people sure are free with their personal info, aren't they?

I think Eric Schmidt is under the misguided impression that I need Google+. He's wrong. I don't need Google+, Google+ needs me. But if he'd rather I not sign up for Google+ because I refuse to use my real name so be it. I've gotten along without social networking this long and I will continue to get along without them. Oh wait a minute, I did sign up to Google+ but is it me or is it memorex?

Another paranoid Facebook fanboy article. Ho, hum. I'm so surprised......not. If you insist on having something to hide, stay away from social networking and continue hiding under your computer table.

Of course Google and Facebook want your real name. You are the "product" that they "market" to individuals who would like to purchase. How else do you think they make all their money? Ads and your personal information (and photos as well, I might add). The only site doing privacy RIGHT in my eyes is ONLYMEWORLD. I'm loving the fact that I don't even need to use a real name or e-mail address to join. How rare of a find that is these days.

like the quote says " Absolute power Absolutely currupts " google with all their Billions of dollars and and the ability to just buy out any of the competition that they want to has no reason to be a fair and just company, they can get away with anything they want ..... if another company stands in their way , buy it crush it, if the laws stand in their way , buy the politicians and have the laws changed ... why on earth would anybody actually believe that google is looking out for their best interests? it's a company in business to make money

Everybody has something to hide. Do you not have curtains on you windows or locks on your doors? Do you wear pants?

A - A Few Days After Any G+ Account Creation, GOOGLE Checks For The Validity Of That Specific User Name ( Only Letters, No Special Characters, A Minimum Word Length, ..., ... ).

B - To Use The Account, That User Must Follow Those Rules Before Its 'REAL NAME' Is Allowed.

C - When Full Account Functionality Is Granted, How Can GOOGLE Confirm That It Is, Indeed, Its 'REAL NAME' ?

D - If, 'On The Internet, Nobody Knows You Are A Dog', Why Bother ?

Who was it that said "you can fool some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time, but not all the people all of the time?" There seems always to be someone who just has to try.

Feel free to trust Google with your personal/private information if you chose; just don't expect that all should be so foolish.

We look forward to your publicly revealing anything that anyone wants to know about you.

I'll settle for your SSN.

Google has public reasons to know all about you for commercial use and covert reasons to know all about you for Big Brothers use. Investigate Google's public and covert government funding. Imagine how much easier it would have been for Hitler or Stalin to round up and liquidated unwanted groups!!!

I don't believe google can enforce you to use your real name, simply use a convincing name, and done. Unless google starting to ask your social security ID.

If you are expecting privacy on the internet then you are a fool.

bignumone, you are absolutely correct. It's called Fascism, it's what's for supper!

Only put online what you want them to know. If you want privacy get a land line and call people on the telephone. It's the only secure way to talk to someone that is not mined for information, other than a face to face! Not from your desk at work either. Those calls are readily recorded.

If your privacy is so important to you, use separate browses and monitor what goes in and out of your computer. Firefox has an excellent set of detection apps that will stop any information from leaving your computer that you don't want other people to have. Use Chrome for Gmail and Google + and lock the thing down so only what you want gets out. In other words don't be clicking on Canadian Pharma ads unless that's what you really want to do. Don't type anything in the browser unless it's something you want Google to know about you.

And, you know that smartphone you have in your hand waiting for he next status update from FB? GET RID OF THE DAMN THING! Not one single person on the face of this earth should be able to have so much control over you that you have to rely on a piece of machinery! That's why you were given a brain, to think for yourself.

I commend G+ for holding their ground. Using a fake identity suggests that "you" have something to hide, and the only people hiding behind fake identities are the ones who don't want to be found...or caught. Like lurking pedophiles.
